And astillbe can I plant in the shade, It gets a bit of morning sun, and I have just dug up a disastrous plant that turned out to be a ground cover. ( Note to self never buy anything before researching) Sweet woodruff Agh, It was sold to me a few years ago, I thought it was pretty, and well you know the rest. Any how, Would like to put something in this area that has three giant hostas and now a big empty space, It is under a fairly large ornamental crab. Would love ideas! idea

I love my bleeding hearts...that flower bed just gets morning sun and my hearts thrive there...even in my clay soil that keeps trying to convince me it is top soil! grin

I love my Primroses. Admittedly they don't bloom for very long but I love them just the same. You could put a very colorful bunch in a large space. The bleeding hearts are nice too. I don't have very good luck with them myself.

Thanks guys great suggestions all. You know I used to have bleeding hearts several years ago, and a few years ago they just never came back. I adored them too.
My columbines are all over even in full sun, they just grow everywhere. Well okay I spread the seeds! :)
Edited to add.. WOW Bill great resources. I need to remember to use them on here, Fantastic! Thanks for all you do!

Used to have some really nice ferns in my shade garden at the other house as well as bleeding hearts. I have a ton of bleeding hearts, if you'd like me to send you some bare roots, shoot me a PM. I don't mind thinning mine out and giving you some.

I tried the japanese painted ferns in my shade garden. They came up ones kind of scraggly and then went away. I was really disappointed. There are several plants that have disappointed me. I guess my brown thumb hasn't really turned greeen yet.

TK wait until next year , the fern might come back.

The first year I had planted my hostas, they shriveled up & died after a while---I thought to myself well, they were not sun Hostas as they were advertized---but I did nothing else to the area....

well the next hear they came back, did faily well, & now, several years down the road, they come back every year strong & good---so I say hold out hope dont make any hasty changes... !!!

TK - I have 2 painted ferns that I planted about 3 years ago under the white birch tree out front. They came from the same place, are planted the same - one is thriving and the other barely limps along each year. I've decided they are pretty finicky, so don't blame your thumb for that plant! kissie

Junie one leaf did come back that fall but I haven't seen anything this year. But as you say I haven't done anything in that area hoping against hope that it will come back.

Plants and pots thanks for the moral support. It could well be that area. I tried the forest grass there too and it shriveled up and died. We won't even mention the mock orange or the hydranga.

It might be time to do a soil sample in that area and see if something is going on that is not good for the plants I'm choosing.

The painted ferns sound lovely But I bet they are not hardy in My zone.. Michigan.
I will have to go to the Nursery to see if I can find anything this week.
I dont want anything that gets too big or runs wild!
