NOTE: this is NOT vertical gardening!

This is for squash plants; I can't let them sprawl, don't have space.

was told to use slanted cucumber trellis; width of trellis is too big to fit in containers. Containers are only 40"-42" wide, trellis is 4' wide.

Here is link for what I'm referring to w/trellises:

Wooden trellis available; is smaller than spread and height of plant; is this a problem or not? Will it be strong enough to support total weight of fruit?

If it is positioned correctly in container will the squash climb up the trellis, or will the vines have to be trained?

I would say you will have to start them up the trellis just like I do with my cucumbers. I would also say that I'm not sure that squash plants will grow up a trellis or that the squash itself won't be too heavy for a trellis. Good luck with this.

I agree, you may have to start your plants on their reach for the sun. If you are growing very large squash you can follow their progress and make hammocks to hold their weight. Pantyhose make great hammocks. Also the mesh onion bags and such can work. Something that will allow you fruit to grow and breathe. .
