Camelias are hardy to zones 7 - 10.
They Require Partial shade, but can have Morning sun.
Full shade or Full sun is not good for them.
Pink & white vaireties need more shade time than darker varieties.
They need a well drained slightly acid soil, that is kept evenly moist, esp. when they are in bud or bloom.

If you are going to add Camelia's to your gardens, do so in the Fall or winter months.
Prepare the soil by mixing in generous amounts of peat moss, compost or processed manure with the existing soil.
Dig the planting hole twice the diameter root ball and about 1½ the depth.

Do not plant the root ball too deep in the ground as it could affect the plants blooming. If you put the top of the root ball about 1 inch above the soil that will help the ball not be too low when the soil settles. When done, water in heavily to settle the soil. Lastly cover the ground with 2-3 inches of mulch to protect the moisture levels of the gorund around your plant

You should fertilize them in late winter OR very early spring when the new growth is first appearing. You should use a slow-release, Rhododendron type fertilizer applied sparingly around the drip line of the plant.
Always water fertilized plants thoroughly after the applying fertilizer.
Placing fertilizer directly beneath Camellias can result in burning the shallow, tender new roots.
Just always carefully read your directions.

Camellias need little pruning. They can however be pruned back right after blooms fade or in mid-summer to remove weak, spindly or dead branches. You can thin out the inner branches and shorten lower limbs to promote upright growth..

All that important information said I have 3 camellia's that are gigantic shrubs and they are all 3 in full sun. One is white and dainty, the other is red and looks like a rose, the other is red and looks like a carnation. I'm in zone 7b.

Yes, they are beautiful.

Barb, I freeze tomatoes. I dice them up & then measure out 1 can's worth & freeze them that way.

the thing I love about camellias is that around here they are disease free and grow no matter what.

There are now buds on the camellias. That's how I know it's fall. The dainty, white camellia blooms.
