It's Voice over IP; basically a phone adapter for the internet; you plug it into your router (after plugging it into your computer and setting up an account) and plug a phone into it and it gives you a phone line with unlimited talk time for like $35 a year.
I hear the MJPlus fixes all of the problems the original one had by allowing you to not have it plugged into a computer all the time

I've been thinking about getting a Magic Jack plus, but always figured there was some kind of a hidden catch. $35/year sounds too good to be true.

It does a good job (Magic Jack Plus, not the original magic jack) from what I've been able to assertain; and the trial is a trial, they simply don't charge you for a 30 day window and if you return it they don't charge you); it doesn't really cost that much to operate a company that could technically offer prices like this, they've been doing this for a while, the fact that they still exist should say something...

Ok, I've been using MagicJack Plus for about a month now, in fact, I've canceled my 7 year account with Vonage after using MagicJack Plus for this period (as MagicJack Plus costs in a year what Vonage does in a month)...
The only real "complaint" I have with MagicJack Plus is that my caller ID doesn't display the caller's name (just their number) and evidently Call Waiting doesn't send CID information at all...
But, you know, for $40/yr for unlimited talky talky I guess I can understand the little cutbacks...
I stand by stating that the original MagicJack sucks as it requires itself to be plugged into an always on PC if you expect to get calls, and that PC must always be on... MagicJack Plus however is a device that you can just plug into your router and you don't have to have a computer on at all... And they've done right in so many places that I'd totally recommend it to someone who has a reliable internet connection...

Dialup?
VoIP (Vonage, MagicJack, etc) requires high speed broadband, so DSL or Cable required...

I have DSL--but my phone company has a sort of a monopoly---you either have dish internet thru the dish company or you have internet thru the phone company--if you do otherwise they charge you per minute when you are on your internet---

I've heard 911 calls can't be traced to your address though in case of an emergency

I've heard 911 calls can't be traced to your address though in case of an emergency I have 911 access, I did on Vonage too... In fact, Trey got "curious" and dialed 911 on Vonage, so I can attest that it definitely works there lol... Whichever address you have on your "e911 Setting" on MagicJack is the one they provide to your local police, so it should just work as well...

I had DSL in Beaverton, OR when I lived there for a while, we had no landline (my ex and I both had cellphone service, no point); I don't think they could get away with that kind of treatment out here...

well, see they have it figured out--you technically can but then they charge you a minute by minute fee for the internet---so if ya wanna pay thru the nose for internet---well it is your choice. I guess that is how they get to say it is not a monopoly....
