The gardens look marvelous. You'd never know they had sustained damage.

Well, last night we had very high winds that broke off a very large branch from one of my sivler maple trees...it fell right on top of one of my Japanese maples and crushed it...broke off all but 2 branches. It looks very sad...sorta like Charlie Brown's Xmas tree, but worse.

I'm so sorry to hear that. They are really slow growing aren't they. Do you think it will ever recover to the point where it looks good again?

Gardening is always a challenge but some years are more challenging than others, Alan. You have had more than your fair share this year. I hope your little maple recovers nicely.

Your gardens are beautiful, Alan! So sorry about your maple, but I have every faith that it will come back nicely for you - you have that special touch!

Actually, I don't think I can save the maple, or should I say it wouldn't look right even if it lives. The branches on the right side won't grow back, and it looks rather odd with only 2 branches on left side! I'll just replace it with some annuals for now and deal with it next year. (sigh) Mother Nature has been very cruel to me this year, but when I think about all the people who lost their homes and loved ones in the recent tornados I feel extremely fortunate. I really don't know what I would do if that happened to me....I feel so bad for them.

Your little maple sounds like a bonsai candidate to me.
I agree. It could have been so much worse.

I am surprised at the bonus maple seedlings I am finding this year - not only from the regular large maples, but a couple from my fancier Japanese Maples. I am letting them grow where they seeded, and then hope to move them next year when they are a bit larger.

Perhaps your maple sent out a few seedlings that you could do the same with next year, Alan?

I have one heck of a time pulling up all the silver maple seedlings in my beds....they reseed everywhere! But I haven't seen any from my Jap. maples.

I'm pulling up the baby maples and oak all over my yard so I'm with you on that one. I don't think I've ever seen a japanese maple volunteer seedling either. You are very lucky plants n pots.

I found a teensy tiny Japanese maple seedling the other day behind a rock on the back end of the pond.It only has 2 true leaves so far, so I am letting grow there this season and will move it come fall.

First, let me say, yes you are indeed a very lucky person, Lynne---and second, I too have been pulling up all kinds of seedlings----now mind you, I cannot get any real trees to grow here, but those from seeds---sure "THEY" grow--and this my friends is because I am "old" & cannot wait for 3 inch trees to grow into something that will make my yard look nice & produce shade--- rolz

Not meaning to hijack this thread, but here is the baby Japanese Maple today.

And here is the mother.

This was a $29.99 purchased at Home Depot a few years ago.
Worth every penny! It looked like a stick with a few leaves back then. I love how it has been filling out over the years!
