Well first let me say I looked & all I could see is where Sheri I think it was closed WDYDITGT # 5--so I hope I didnt miss something--- why

Yesterday I cleaned out my front flower bed of all of the dead leaves & such. My Dafodills, crocus, wild violets (& 3 Hyacinth ) were much appreciative.

Then I got the rake & raked up 2 big buckets of leaves from aropund my front porch.---(who would have thought that someone without any 'real' trees in their yard would have to rake so much???)
Golly it felt good to do that-- hifive party
next project is the back yard flower beds---there will also be mulching to do there---

I don't know what bunching onions are.

I did plant the onions today as well as more lettuce, beets, carrots, potatoes and 6 Better Boy tomato plants someone gave Johnny. They're already about 10 inches high so I put them in the ground. I said last year that I was taking a season off from gardening. That thought lasted until it was time to plant.

I hope you discover some new plants to wish for... thumbup

old Today was national fern whacking day, so I whacked about thirty huge (6 ft.) Sword Ferns back to the ground. This winter's snow smashed them pretty bad. They will all have nice fresh foliage popping up soon.

lol nooooooooo. I still have hundreds of seeds to plant, two types of nut trees, 2 types of fruit trees, an unspecified number of flowering trees to get and two expensive peonies to buy. I don't need anything else, but thanks for the thought.

Tonigjht after supper I went out to (once again) remove the leaves form my smaller flower bed in the front.

Now I could understand this if I had any real sized trees in my yard, which I do not---(I think the tallest one is like 15 ft tall.) Apparently the neighbors have learned to share... rolz

so from there I moved on to cutting down my last years "dead" flower stalks & removing invading weeds.

if you all remember I didnt get to do my fall clean up do to health issues.

Then I came in the house and transplanted 2 plants & also starte 3 pots of seeds. (2 patio tomatoes & 1 sweet basil.)

I officially announce that spring is here !!!! clown applaud shewinks

I just started making my garden into something decent and I figure I have at least two weeks of weeding and preperation to go. I pulled weeds and and removed debri :).

EDIT: Phase Two and end of gardening for today. I went and pulled some more roots, loosened up the soil and shifted it around a bit. I also started a little bit of a rock border (we used to have PVC piping. I hypothesized this would be a horrible idea many years ago. Lo and behold, it was. Ugliest thing when exposed to the elements.) I swept away the excess soil and went around and picked up any papers or plastic in my yard. I also started trying to control this weird long grass that I suspect is making our shrubs unhealthy. I watered the soil.

I wish I had taken a before picture, it already looks so much better!

wow Cinder--sounds as if you have been one busy person!!!
keep up the good work--I bet it will be beautiful !!!

This afternoon when I got back form my DD's shower, I went out front & planted some dwarf Iris bulbs, & transplanted some wild violets from the yard to my flower bed there.

Then I went into the back & began weeding in my rock garden in the there & did more debris clearing from the flower bed there also.

Then, what do I see in "THE" window well??-----a froggie !! you could see the hole that he had just came out from his hibrirnation at. Yea for the froggie (& me)---

Mr. Frog must have heard you announce that it's officially spring!!

I have lettuce that is big enough to eat and radishes aren't far behind. I'm going to put out some squash this week. The potatoes, onions, carrots, beets aren't up yet. I hope the cold snap didn't hurt them. The peas are up in a few spots. It seems I don't have good luck with green peas.

This weekend the ground was finnaly thawed. couldn't get a shovel in last weekend. We weeded two more gardens found lots of iris' comming up and at least 8 groupings of tulips. I also saw something torpedo shaped coming up that is almost a peachy salmon colour. I'll have to wait to see what that is.
Its nice to have the leaves of the gardens adn it starting to look a bit less like the mess we got when we moved in.

Seeing as the ground was thawed we started digging up rocks from the border of the garden I thought most had been removed for other purposes but as it turned out the one garden along the side of the house that we did (about 50 feet) had rocks allthe way along but many were buried up to 4 inches. Makes me wonder when the last time they were seen and when the garden was properly cared for.

I pulled some more radishes yesterday and have more lettuce that's ready to eat. We hilled the potatoes for the first time. They're coming up great. The green peas are coming up in spots. I even replanted them. I just must not have what it takes for growing green peas.

I have a packet of seeds that are labeled as "bunching onions". They look just like regular green onions. Not ones meant to get big and round. (seeds never came up for me so I can't tell you exactly.)

I had to pull up my 2nd round of radishes today that I planted two weeks ago. It is already too hot here and they aren't growing. First round did great...thank goodness I got them out extra early. Also have 2 pumpkin blossoms that opened up today. I pulled up the rest of my onions that I grew from sets. This is the first year I've done that...none grew very big. Thought they were supposed to all grow to 3 or 4 inches round but I don't really know what I'm doing I guess...lol. Still they are edible and that's what counts in my book.

Oh, and I'm planting several varieties of green beans where I just pulled up all the onions and radishes. Never grown those before but I've read they are supposed to be really easy. Of course, that's never been an indicator of success for me personally, but I'm hopeful.

I grow blue lake bush beans, it's a green bean, and they are easy to grow. I've never had a problem with bugs on them. Sorry about your radishes. Mine are doing well this year as is the lettuce.

Today I planted tomatoes, basil around the tomatoes and dill where I'll put the squash.

Between working and rain and weeding and and more rain and mowing and and rain/hail/snow and re-weeding, I haven't done much in the garden worth mentioning. I did, however, do a little more work on the bird feeder and managed to get 25 of my Daylilies moved into the new display gardens...

BTW... while I was out taking that picture, Wild Willy wandered through and pointed here and mumbled something about inspiration and some new secret project... When I asked for details, he just told me to mind my own business, then wandered down the trail into the woods. why

How did you plant your daylilies Bill? I have about 11 sprouts and would like to plant them in a clump but I don't know how to space them.

The best time to transplant or divide plants is in early spring or immediately after they finish flowering.
Dig the entire plant up and gently pull the leaf fans apart, with each division having a minimum of 3 fans.
Replant divisions 18"-36" apart.
(Newly divided plants may not flower the first summer)

And they do not bloom if they are rootbound. So lots of space between your seedlings, TK.

blush oops....
I wasn't thinking of seedling sprouts...
I've gotten all of my Daylilies in gallon or larger pots and had a vision of their sprouts popping up in the spring.
I think I'd plant your seedlings about 2"-3" apart and see how that works out... But that's just my best guess...

I was not correcting you, Bill. And I would still leave plenty of room even between seedlings so you wouldn't have to transplant/divide any too soon.
I have gotten my daylilies from larger pots or larger roots too. But I have transplanted many volunteer seedlings away from the parent plant.

I would plant those sprouts in groups of 3 (and one of 2) in a triangle with at least 10 inches between each.

So in a 10" Radius plant like the two in the center and then 10" out 1/3 distance from each other plant the 3 groupings of three? That will make a good clump? Like you my other daylily species were all mature plants when I planted them so this one I'm not at all sure about. I have to look up the stella dora and see what color it is. So far in the ditch bed I have the orange and a green.

Not exactly what I meant, TK. I really meant a group of 3 in a 10" isosceles triangle, then a few feet away, another group, etc. But if you truly want them all in one spot, still do isosceles triangles but plant the next groups only about 10-18 inches from the firs triangle. I hope that is clearer.

Today I moved the original mum a bronze to it's new location under my bedroom window. The red one that I had there didn't make it through the winter. Then I dug up all the blackberry canes and roots that were moving out from their bed and into the lawn. I hope I got all of the roots.

TK--I think if you keep the soil really moist for awhile ithe canes will take root easily----I have even just buried a branch & after it took root I then cut it from the mother plant---worked l ike a charm.

In the back yardI bought & planted a line of Irish & Sotch Moss along my house under the water spigot. I also planred an ice plant6 & one gypsophila--(a pink one)

and just when I was going to go out & buy & plant this years offerings in the flower bed, they are predicting 30* temps for tonight-- tears-so I guess I will wait until next week at the earliest to plant any more flowers.
Meanwhile---
it is still way water-logged in teh far back yard--if this keeps up I will never get my potatoes & sunflowers planted for this year----at least with Tomatoes, I can buy larger plants if it gets lateer in the season.... rolz

This is way too late in my estimation--I usually plant around the 5th of may--& today is the 3rd---cutting it kinda close I think---

I'm getting rid of the blackberries that are outside their bed not trying to add more lol.

I was at River Valley yesterday and picked up a pack of 4 of the burgandy petunias. I couldn't resist they are a great color. When my set blooms I'll take a picture.

Today i just looked around because it rained all last night and this morning so everything is very wet.

Woohoo! They had Japanese Painted Ferns at Wal-Mart. You better believe I snapped one up and planted it beside the garden bench where I had mis-planted the peacock orchid the year before. I was wondering what I was going to put in that full shade location. Now I have the perfect plant. I hope it does well there. So of course since I was then on a buying spree I got a half price well grown sedum for the ditch bed and a yellow primrose to add to the tree bed so I now have a total of three of them. I also picked up some sweet banana pepper seeds for next years garden.

Harvested my very first radishes today. One is kind of interesting. I'm not sure if it split into 3 perfect lobes or if it is "Simese Triplets". I plan to try it alittle later when I prepare a salad. It's either going to be woody or just fine. While I was out there I weeded that row of the veggie garden now I just have 3 rows to go.

I also continued with the blackberry war - digging up another 4 or 5 canes that didn't have any flowers on them.

The new lawn mower got a work out trying to cut some grass that is to tall. I'm going to have to weed eat the tall stuff so I can get at it with the lawn mower. I will get ahead of the game but it may be July before I manage it.

The fruit trees all have their fertilizer stakes now and they have all been weeded. One of the Cherries had a bunch of suckers and I got them all while I was at it.

I raked up the green that I managed to cut and got it added to the compost pile. I must say I love playing in the compost pile.

today I finished mowing the front yard and then I started the task of building a flower bed around my bird bath. The area around the bath is clay and rocks and not easy to dig through. I only managed about 3 inches deep and 2 feet around half of it today. Of course that includes screening the dirt and getting all the weed roots out of it and breaking up the clay so I can add compost. Then digging up enough rocks to make an edging around the half that I got completed. It's suppose to rain all week so that should soften up the clay enough that I can finish the bed before the rain ends and I have to go back to mowing the lawn lol.

This past weekend my granma came up to stay with me a change for her and some extra gardening advice for me. As I have a cooler climate, I still have new things popping up everyday. One plant comnig up I thought might be a hosta, it was a round tube though it kind looked like spiraled leaf.
She took one glance at it and was quite surprised. Apparently it a Jack in the Pulpit, it’s a cool looking plant, Just not common to find in gardens around here.
I also learned that I need to dig up all the tulips. I couldn't figure out why they wre so flat till grandma want to see a bulb, so we dug one up. The bulb is fine but about 15 inches down. I should have figure everything too deep after find that the top of the rock border on the garden was 4 inches under ground.

Just now, in the mud, I planted the following flowers--
1) a week ort so ago I planted a trailing while osteospermum & a Lemon Symphony Osteo---then

2) I planted 4 tomato plants in my garden & transplanted a sunflower plant from my flower bed (thank you so much to my winering birds) a few days later--

3) today in the mud as I said earlier I planted a "Little Annie" Echinacea---my arizona suns seem to die every year--we shall see what happens with this one. why
I planted a Purple striped summer snap dragon (angelonia)
and also a Dwarf Zinnia--"Zahara Starlight rose" as well.

it was chilly out & have I mentioned how I dislike MUD?? well I do----my gloves, hand spade & the flower bed itslef is a mess, with mud all around--- uhuhh So after just those few, I came in.

Today I cut one swath of tall grass with the cartoon weed wacker (it overheats in about 15 minutes and melts the cartridge that holds the line.

I raked up the grass and added it to the compost pile and mixed it in good.

I planted a replacement San Mareno tomato for the one I lost.

I weeded all 8 tire beds.

I cleaned the bird bath and added fresh water.

I watered the birdbath flower bed (yellow Zinnias are planted there.)

And I watered all 8 tire beds after weeding them.

My yard is a mess lol. The weed wacker broke at the beginning of the season and the one I replaced it with can't handle the job and the Reel Mower I got to make up the difference can't handle the crab grass clumps and the uneven lawn. So the grass is up to my bumps in height.

And the weeds are having a bumper year to boot. I may never manage to keep up with everything.

I remember a year back when the girls were small---it rained so much that my cousin's DH (a normally very particular man) just mowed his whole garden down---the weeds just were taking over B/C of the rain & such---

I say plan for next year, huh???

My neighbor came over with her riding mower and mowed my entire yard. Isn't that fantastic? While she was doing that I managed to weed the sidewalk, half the foundation bed and the sidewalk bed. I still have a great deal of weeding to do but with the weeks repreve she has given me I feel like I might manage it. She is a super lady.

Thanks JunieGirl Don't you love getting to plant stuff. I found an entire load of celosia out in the sidewalk bed. I can't wait for them to get large enough to bloom. There were also several petunias from a couple of years ago. I even have one zinnia that jumped beds lol. I'm looking forward to seeing what all the colors are of the volunteers.

This past weekend I planted Corn, Squash (butternut and hubbard), peppers (Cajun Belle), Spinach, Canaloupe and Dahlias. The Dahlias are going to be my wedding flowers I figured I can save a bundle by not paying a florist and growing them my self. I have a few family members growing them too in case they don't work out in one location.

My dog (Arco) discovered toads living in one of the flower beds and has decided that toads trump a no paw zone! So today I will be trying my best to tidy up that area.

I found one frog in my blueberry bed the other week. I think the rain has convinced them to come out around here. I've got yellow squash in my veggie garden. It's just getting adjusted to meing transplanted and started to grow.

I think it's great that your growing your own flowers. And that you've got your family members helping incase there is a problem with one bunch.

Tammy, YES I LOVE to plant stuff--and I love the returning flowers & plants as well---Sad to say I probably pull up a lot of my returning flowers as I do not recognize all of my flowers when they are seedlings...Luckily for me, I DO recognize galliardia---

Tonight I weeded & mulched around my 4 tomato plants and my lone sunflower plant.
Then I began to do the same around my herbs--

I then watered my flower bed in teh back & when I was done with that I filled the water dish that I have in my window well for my froggie. (& Rod removed my visiting turtle, thankfully.

lastly I found a rubbermaid container to act as a temperary home to my water lily so I could clean out the plastic pot that I keep it in. It has a leak so I needed to scrub it out & let it dry for 24 hours. Then I will repair it & then let it dry for another 24 hours before re-filling it.

Rod sprayed the dark cherry tree tonight with fruit tree spray & then made up some roundup to get rid of a few weeds...so then he gave some to me & I used a bit of it in my rocked areas.
Now I can get to re-mulching & rock adding that I need to do--YEA !!!!

well this evening I finished up adding annuals to my large flower pot that is on the front porch--I bought a medium pink Calibrachoa today & I took the Trailing Blue superbells out of the pot & put the pink in it's place---(the blue/purple was basically just sitting there doing nothing)--so now it has its own pot--I hope it likes it in there better--- why

Then I added a Black Gamecock Iris to my water lily half barrel---It is likley done blooming but hey the green leaves will add to the green of my lily pads, right ???

Then in a large pot I put a small Butterfly Bush---a "Buzz Blue Violet"--I was told a few years back that these smaller BB's take well to container growing--I hope it does. prayers

Finally in my large flower bed I added:

A "Beyond Paradise" Copperleaf Plant
A white Ice Plant
A Amber Wheels "Gaillardia (yellow)

Plus I moved my Little Annie Echinacea--
my pink Angelonia
and
one of my small gaillardia that had come back from last year.

then I weeded a bit and watered some--

But now guess what ??? it is raining--(& thundering--again---). rolz-----but then none of you are surprised about that are you ???--

Suffice to day that tonight I changed around a few more of my flowers in my large flower bed & then washed out my hummingbird feeders & refilled them---now they are all ready for tomorrow.

We have been doing major mowing! My grass got way ahead of me, all I have is a push mower, and I am not in the best shape, and I have a huge yard. So my bestest (only) son in law borrowed a Gravely and has mowed it all. Bless his heart! I did do some weed eating tonight, I hate my weed eater.. it's a junky electric one. Ugh. But at least it did some good.

So far I have only cleaned out some of the muck from the bottom of my pond. And of course the stuff floating. In between the bottom muck and the floating stuff the water is clear and clean. Was, I should say. I stirred it up pretty good. It will settle gain soon.
I am slowly removing the rocks that line the inside of the pond to really get it cleaned up. It should be cleaned in time for the fall foliage to gob it up again. I may stretch a net over it for that season.
I should have waited for warmer weather to work on it though. We have some really cool mornings this week. I'm a little chilled.

Oh Tina--you have a pond--how cool!!!

Today I and my lawn sweeper cleared off the back yard----so now, my tomatoes, my herbs & my lone sunflower are mulched for the season. I was going to do the front yard tomorrow night but when I came in, Rod wanted to know why I raked up the back yard---so I guess I am done,--well, done for this week anyway

Yes, we put the pond in about 20 years ago.
[Linked Image]

It used to be irregular kidney-shaped about 6 ft X 12 ft and 4 ft deep. We made it a little smaller when we redid it.

This morning was sprinkler repair and hose repair. The critters are eating me out of house and home the last year or so. And then a trip to Home Depot for more parts to do the same again this afternoon. I also purchased a couple more hoses while there.

I have no fish left. A stork came by last year and took the last of them.
Today it will be more fixing up of things and getting ready for the heat coming up on us. Lots and lots of water will be needed out there the next couple of months. I am almost ready for it.
I need to dig a ditch across a road today to bury a pipe. This is not fun at all.

Sorry about the lack of fishies, but I am glad that you still have the pond....

well---time to bring this back up...

Yesterday I moved some of my flowers--- I moved my "Amber Wheels" Gaillardia (for the 3rd time this year) rolz
, so I could take my Buzz Blue Violet Butterfly Bush out of its pot and put it in my flower bed where the Amber Wheels was.--now next year I will have my purple Russian Sage on one end of the flower bed & my purple Mini Butterfly bush on the other end-- clap I looked thisd morning & both are doing well---

I also made a grid of this flower bed so I will know how many annuals to buy next spring.--see, each year I fill in my Perennials with a few annuals--this way I get to try new flowers.

Next up will be to mark where the exsisting Perennials are as I am not the bext at discerning between young weeds and flowers why

I love Blackberry lillies as well----
\and about E-bay--no I do not use pay Pal--I use "Bill Me later"----you go thru it and then pay pal pays the seller & then you get a bill in the mail from the people at "Bill me later"---so no one has to ever have my Credit card or bank information....

Ok Barb--I bought some Blackberry lily seeds just now--they will be coming just a few days after the toad lily seeds.

But, the ones I just bought are a lighter orange with pinkish edges---so this should be interesting to say the least.

Today I raked. We had some winds come through and pine needles fell like rain all over. And some cones too. So I was raking so that I could set up a tent for some weekend company. Next it will be a groundcloth and tent.

I dont know what I am doing--I guess I need to speak to Bill---
for my Toad lilies I think he said I could planmt them now because then they would go thru the cold winter before spring???

yooooo hooooooo Bill??

do I plant my seeds now (when I get them?) or do I wait until spring???---and this is E-bay so I dont think they will coem with directions. Although the auction said something about putting the seeds in the ice box for a month before planting--but did not say when to plant..

looky what I found Dodge--you are right, but I can still plant them in the fall---yea me----

How to Start Blackberry lillies From seed

Sew the seeds into the ground in the fall or spring by placing 1/4 inch in well drained soil, in full sun. If planting in the fall, cover with mulch to keep the soil a little warmer. If planting in spring, make sure you wait until there will be no more frost.

Well today was about the only day I've been out in the garden since spring. Weird huh? But I didn't get out there and I cut the weeds down on the side of the shed. Took the tops to the compost pile and mixed them in. Then I weeded the blueberry bed. I've lost one of the three plants. I put down the hollytone for the fall so that's done.

Then I used the hollytone for the miniature roses in the mixed bed and put the very last of it on the lavender azalea bush.

It wasn't much but it was something.

I thought blackberry lilies liked a cold spell before they sprouted. Not that you can tell it around my place the silly things will sprout wherever they land as long as the ground is soft. I have a balanced pH if that makes any difference with them.

Congrats on getting the lotus to germinate.

I've planted some lettuce in my new greenhouse and am going to try to start a tomato plant or two from seed. We'll see how they do over the winter.

Shari: A new greenhouse--wow that is great--I am so happy for you.

And yes the Blackberry lilies do like a cold spell,,,,so I am going to plant mine this fall (I was going to plant them all today but it rained this afternoon) so they will get a gopod long streatch of cold----and since they will be up against the house it will not be a severe cold....
I will also plant my Toad lilies this fall..........

Yesterday (not today) I dug up my chives & potted them---as my DH wants to move my garden---I will move them to their new home when the new garden is done----

(you see I brought this plant from "the farm" when we moved into town---at the time all I could find was the garlic chives and this is the common chive, so I brought the plant with me-----now it is the principle of the thing--- grin)

Mr. Rape, our carpenter, built it. It's just a small one but I love it. It has water inside and heat. I'm going to try planing tomatoes directly into the ground.

Hey, Bill & Cindy !! LOOK !!!!

Well, today, on the way home from the baptism I stopped at this Nursery that is just down the road from my DD's house.--I wanted to see if I could buy some Toad lily seeds for Dodge---well she had no seeds but she DID have some Toad lily Plants---they were buy one get one and the one only cost me $5.00---can you imagine??? applaud

I was so happy I took the 2 and gave one to my DD and kept one for me---
then when I came home I:
1) dug up my daffodils & moved them down so I had more planting room---
2) I then planted my Toad lily plant, my Blackberry lily seeds and my Toad lily seeds (the seeds are (Tricyrtis Hirta) ---yea me !!!!
Below is the picture of my toad lily plant--(Tricyrtis Empress).

I replanted my big pot on the front porch for the fall....
I planted 3 small pots of yellow mums and 1 pot of blue Asters in the pot--My spikes that were in the center are still ok so I just planted the other 4 plants around them....Below is a picture of that project:

Well I really did this last weekend, but I transplanted my hubbyies red bud trees and planted a basil plant I bought to groe this winter inside, so I can eat it with my cut up tomatoes on pasta..--

last night I brought in to the garage the 2 potted red bud trees and 2 of 3 pots my chive plant that I potted when Rod destroyed my garden this fall---one I will keep in the house for winter use & the other I will put in the basement to let go dormant. I will repant it next year when we redo my garden in a different location---I am particularily partial to this plant...it is my Chive plant from "the farm" I just could not leave it there.

I cut a few little trees out of the daylilly. Acorns are falling like crazy and little oaks are springing up everywhere. I hate when that happens. We're having the garden spot tillered tomorrow. I'm trying a new compost method where I put the compost directly into the garden spot - covered with dirt of course. This way I don't have to haul it from one place to the other in the fall.

That sounds like it should work nicely, Sheri. And if nutrients and stuff does leach out of it, it will be in the best place for it. No waste.

I "fed" the two small rose bushes in our yard. They got cut back a week ago.
