OK, you always see them first LOL...I put out my feeder two days ago. How long have you had yours out Diane? How often are you changing the water at this point? For some reason, I want to say I saw my first one in Feb. last year as well, but I can't find where I wrote it down :(

Cool maps that make the anticipation of seeing them that much more palpable when you can watch the progression coming your way.

The rufous have made it here and I saw my first one today. Those little things are loud! We also got to see a female anna's defending what must have been her nest area. She was aggressively going after anything that came near that area. Neat to witness that.

Been feeding them for over 30 years and never saw them this early that I can remember. It's almost always been April 15th...last year was April 14th...this year April 9th...I'm sensing a pattern here. idea

Odd...I haven't seen another hummingbird since I spotted the first one the other day...and was thinking "Wow...if I hadn't looked out the window just at the right time I wouldn't have known it was even here yet". idea

I also have my first 3 hummers today - a full week earlier than the past 8 years or so that I've been noting their arrivals. Two male ruby throated and 1 female are just relaxing in the tree outside this window, preening themselves. It's so exciting when they return!

That's odd about them showing up early everywhere...must be that "global warming" they keep telling us about.

I have a bazillion now...went outside awhile ago to change the feeders and got attacked by an irate male who thought I was taking his food away. lol I love them little suckers so much...they are so darn cute!

I so wished I has a bazillion of them! I'm lucky to get 3 a year to watch. Have you guys been watching Phoebe's Webcam on Ustream? One baby is hatched and waiting for the second one....so cute!

Could it have been another eagle cam? I was on Phoebe's site yesterday and in the chat room is where they were talking about it. These eaglets are only a few days old correct? The others were quite a bit older I thought....

The eagles I am watching were hatched the first week of April...they are huge now. I've been watching them since they were eggs.

Must not be the same 'eagle cam'...glad I wasn't watching the other one... tears

This is so funny--unreal really

I just came in from putting out my hummingbird feeders---so I put them out, came in & looked out the window at them---& what do I see there in my feeder, closest to the house ?? a hummingbird--!~!! YEP I did !!!

I guess that proves I should have had the feeders out earlier, huh??? I would have but for the rain, because everyone else said their Hummers were coming about a week early this year, ---oh well ya live ya learn---

I swear my hummingbirds get a kick out of watching me jump every time they buzz my head. At least they used to, then I neglected my garden and feeder and they left. Today, however, I realized that at least one is back and I think it's one that was here before because she didn't really seem afraid of me at all and was hovering right in front of me, less than a foot away. I felt like we were both admiring each other. I talked, she chipped (not chirped), lol. She did let me try to get some good shots.

I tried to get her wings, a little blurry but not too shabby.

Great shots, Cheryl!

So what kind of hummers did I hear constantly chirping and buzzing around my son's apartment in Irvine, California? I finally found 2, early one morning and got a few pictures that I'll post, once I figure out how to upload them from my new camera!

Hard to say California has several different species of hummers. a couple of them are there year-round, the rest migrate. They will NOT be Ruby-Throated Hummers, though. Ruby-throated are not found west of the Rockies and are probably not found IN the Rockies, they are only found in the Eastern U.S. and canada and then only in spring through early Fall, AND they are the only Hummingbird Species in the eastern half of the country.

I did not know you only had one kind over there, Thorny!
California hummingbirds:
Broad-billed hummingbird, Cynanthus latirostris
Xantus's hummingbird, Hylocharis xantusii
Violet-crowned hummingbird, Amazilia violiceps
Blue-throated hummingbird, Lampornis clemenciae
Ruby-throated hummingbird, Archilochus colubris
Black-chinned Hummingbird - Archilochus alexandri
Anna's hummingbird, Calypte anna

Rarer and endangered are;
Allen's hummingbird, Selasphorus sasin (SC)
Costa's hummingbird, Calypte costae (SC)
Rufous hummingbird, Selasphorus rufus (SC)
I love my hummers and never put out feeders. I do plant favorites for them. A lot of native plants are mostly just for the hummers and butterflies. But I do not recognize which types are dive bombing me or just watching and interested in what I am doing.
