Three days ago I heard my FIRST House Wren of the 2007 season singing in MY FRONT YARD! Yesterday, it was singing in someone's back yard across the road from my house. TODAY it was singing in another neighbor's backyard on the OTHER side of my house. IT IS SETTING UP A NESTING TERRITORY AROUND MY YARD!!! grin clap grin Eat your heart out, WRENNIE!

I just thought you'd be jealous that I have a House Wren. I haven't seen it yet, but House Wrens are hard to get a glimpse of, and if you can, it is usually just a silhouette.

They are somewhat skittish but if you use good cover you can sneak up on them. They were a Lifebird for me just two years ago, although I had been trying to figure out what was making that beautiful song for five or six years. Their ENTIRE body shakes and quakes like a Magnitude 9.0 earthquake when they sing. I watched one singing from 5 feet away last year.

A lifebird is one that you've never seen before - some people keep extensive lists of the birds that they have seen.

I thought I was getting house wrens here, but now I'm nor sure if they are, or Carolina wrens. Personally, I do NOT like their VERY LOUD call, especially in the early morning hours just before the sun comes up. I love, birds, but this one has got to go!

I wonder why it's called a "lifebird"?

It's called a Lifebird because it's the FIRST time in your LIFE that you have seen that species ALIVE in its natural habitat. Many birders study a bird for years, seeing thousands of photographs of it, watching movies of it, hearing the sounds it makes, even seeing it alive in zoos and sanctuaries, but UNTIL you have seen it ALIVE in its NATURAL setting it is NOT a Lifebird. When you first start birding almost every bird you see is a Lifebird. The longer you bird the fewer Lifebirds you get each year. I have been birding for over 18 years and the last Lifebird I got was in May of 2006. It was a Double-Crested Cormmorant, which I at first thought was an Anhinga. A waterfowl expert corrected me. Either species would have been a Lifebird for me so I was happy with the correction.

Wrennie and Deborah, House Wrens are found over virtually the entire U.S. and Canada in Summer, and Deborah, you have them all year where you live.

The guy who made the signs for my first store location had a nest of them in the tree right outside his hop window. He & his girlfriend both said they were loud noisy singy chatterers.

i just figured they werent interested in my neting spots when I hadnt seen them in my yard.

They are picky about nesting sites in my experience. I think this one is eyeballing an old wood and plastic, Satellite cable spool I have hanging up as a birdhouse.

That was mine, Wrennie. Something started building a nest there early this spring, but abandoned it. I'm thinking the House Wren might be interested.

Thorny: this will be the 3rd summer we are at this house. The first year I bought a wren house & put it up--No takers---so I ask around & was told wrens do not like new homes (is this true??)
So now the house is 3 seasons old, & still no takers, what am I doing wrong??--Or what am I NOT doing??

It's nothing you are or aren't doing, JunieGirl. Wrens are just VERY finicky nesters. I think many of them are mentally unstable with their odd jerky motions and peculiar behavior. I've NEVER had any wrens nest in my yard to my knowledge, but EVERY year in mid-Summer here comes Mama Wren with about six babies. I'm getting a good sized population in my yard now.
