yep mew too--while I am well aware that onions can b e bought as seeds--I buy the bulbs. and gee I even bought small "starts" a few years back--but that was no challenge I did not think--but I really prefer teh bulbs--I just buy extra & when I pull one onion out, I plant a new one in its place.. grin thumbup

haha

I bought some onion sets and will be planting them in the next couple days (zone 8). YAY!!! I've been waiting with cabin fever for months to get something in the ground! Also have potato sets that will be going in containers this week.

Announcement: I'm PREGNANT!!! Expecting a little boy (baby # 2) in late spring! You what that means: I gotta get all my planting done a lil early this year!

Congratulations on your pregnancy Crystal. Are you sure you don't want to put off the garden lol for a few years. Just wait for pumpkin to come and he will help you. Well, all the best with planting and harvesting..

With the onions dodge, I've started them indoors before and they came out in a a flash, but shortly after grew thread like and died off, there must be a gardeners secret to having the seedlings grow into normal size onion. Again it may be a light problem. Let us know how it goes, I'm curious to see if I'm the only one who can't grow a single onion...lol.

Onion seeds are used by commercial growers. If you buy hybrid onion seeds, you can get some giant onions. Works really well. My father grew huge 2 pound onions, he thought he had broken records. They were consistent all were huge. Those packets you buy at a hardware store, not the same thing. The only drawback is you have to spend like $30 for commercial seeds and not every area has a nearby distributor of seeds.
