Wow those are great shots Dodge, the only cardinl I've seen recently is the one that periodically flys into one of our window.

Cardinals are NOT found west of the Rockies. There are NO Cardinals on the West Coast! Cardinals occur in the Eastern U.S. and Canada.

I knew that but I am not so happy about it. I had a pair that nested in a huge pine in my backyard when I lived in upstate NY. It felt like I lived in a christmas card. And watching them raise their babies was so cool.

I'm not sure my son is the Nikon expert. That lens is pretty much the same as my EF 75-300 MM telephoto Zoom lens I believe. And it WAS snowing when i took these pictures this week. What you need to do is get Adobe Photoshop for your computer and learn how to use it. It's not my camera or lense that makes the good pictures, so much as it is careful processing through Photoshop AFTER the pic ture is taken and Downloaded in my computer.

You have a good lens, Dodge it's just the after processing in Photoshop that makes the picture.

Here is one of your pictures, Dodge, after I ran it through Adobe Photoshop Elements. See the difference? Dodge's Cardinal, Photoshopped

What I mean is I cannot get the closeup on the bird like that with my 55-200
My canon brings it in closer than the Nikon. canon s5
Maybe I need 55-300?

I'm not sure Canon and Nikon lenses are NOT interchangeable. they have different sized openings for the lenses.

Thorn, what I see online is Photoshop Elements 9. Is that what you're talking about?

Yes. Any of the Photoshops or Photoshop Elements will work just fine.

Gosh, it's $600.00 and now it needs a $199.00 upgrade. I'll have to get a 2nd and maybe 3rd job.

GIMP is a great freeware option; not all free software you should be afraid of, Open Source software is generally freeware and distributed by large licenses like the MIT license, Linux Licenses, etc.
I believe there is an addon for GIMP that even makes it look like photoshop
