Hi,
I am having a problem with growing seeds in peat disc and cups. I get the seeds up, but they don't get to maturity. I have tried several times to get petunias to grow. I know that one flat I had was to wet. Could anyone give me some suggestions or help please?

I also have started my seeds, but veggie seeds and they have not done very well, not very big, I put them in my small hothouse and had a lamp on them I would like to get away from buying larger plants and get into growing my own seeds.Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

some petunias require 80 degrees to germinate. That may have been a part of your problem.

I avoid using discs. They dry out very quickly and don't have any nutrients in them.

I start just about everything in potting soil. I have much better luck that way.

I start most things inside under a florescent shop light. A little fan set nearby to help stabilize the plants once they get their first true leaves helps as well.

And after their first 30 days don't forget to add a fertilizer.

Good Luck.

I used peat pellets this year too and yes they do dry out fast. I didn't mind the idea of one cabbage seed per peat pellet instead of having to separate them from the soil when they were ready to transplant. But I will think twice before using that method next year.

Our neighbor gave me a tray of tiny cabbage seedlings that were started in a soil/sand type mix. They too were planted one seed at a time in a small half inch hole tray. They had at least 300 seedlings per tray so they shared with us. I really liked that idea but want to find out what soil they used.

I have the same problem with seeds/seedlings... They get to about 1/2 inch high and fall over and die! It is so sad... I have them in my sunroom but it still seem to happen.. What am I doing wrong?

It sounds like damping off. Whatever you decide to use next whether soil or peat pots try sprinkling some ground cinnamon on top of the soil. Fungi don't much care for it and that is what causes the damping. It will not hurt anything and it is organic.

seedlings should stay evenly moist. Unfortunately that makes for ideal fungus conditions as well. "Damping off" is a fungal condition. Cinnamon makes for an unhappy place for fungus.

So can I put some on the droopy ones, or just let them go? Thanks so much for all of the help, Tina.

t won't hurt to try on the fallen soldiers. If it helps good. If it doesn't you are out a little ground cinnamon. But it smells nice!

Peat pellets are great. I hear animals eat them though?
