I bought a home with a worn out heat pump. I just got an estimate of what an average Hiel heat pump costs. It should take me about 10 years to come up with the 5200 dollars for the unit. I don't even want to think of what it will be to install it.

I'm experiencing sticker shock at the moment. I don't even want to think about this.

So sorry Tammy, I know you have been having a lot of trouble with your home...did you have an inspection done on it before you purchased?

SEER stands for "Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. This is a measure of the energy efficiency of the air conditioning system. SEER ratings permit consumers to compare operating costs of various cooling systems and products.

I talked to the social services office today. They can replace the heat pump if I come in and fill out the paperwork on November 1st. So in the mean time I'm going to use fans and airconditioners and then a space heater.

I'm sure they will require certain estimates and such. I was thrilled to find out that they would do this.

And I'm glad to know there are cheaper units out there.

and keep this in mind too: There are companies that will take advantge of a woman alone. They count on your not knowing what an item would actually cost. And will charge you accordingly.
I will say though it Always pays to shop around.
It happened to us with our A/C repair. one company told us it would cost $600.00 to repair. The next one said well it was no big deal (money wise) but they thought that it was covered under warrenty So, They checked & yep it was covered.
so it is always good to shop around & speak to your friends.

and so, it is very likely that a unit cheaper in price is NOT cheaper in quality.

You may also be eligible for a 'weatherization' grant from the county or your utility company, to get your insulation and possibly even your windows upgraded!

I have the storm windows along with the ones that came with the trailer. Is that what you mean? And I put the film on them last year to keep the uv rays out.

TK I think he was referring to getting the new insulated windows that drop down to the inside so you can clean them inside & out. With them one does not need storm windows.

I too have put that film on my glass sliding doors. IT has dramatically reduced the heat that comes on to my dining area. It has to be saving me a bundle on heating & cooling. I love it so much that I am going to put it on the bedroom windows as well.

I have it on my south facing windows and the sliding glass door. I still have the bedrooms to do as well.

I think it really helps. My windows are the insulated drop down kind BUT the heat still gets thru and this film helps with that a lot!!!
Ihave aluminum foil on my master bedroom windows, but DH says that it looks bad to have it on them & we should take it down. well that will not happen until I add the window film to them.

I've been trying to be energy efficient as much as possible on a limited income. I have the film. I replaced the gaskets on the refrigerator. I run a window air conditioner at night and turn off the heat pump all together. I have a space heater for the computer room for during the winter. And I use the trees that are over crowded on my property to burn to heat the rest of the house.

The front yard trees are of course maturing to shade the house during the heat of the day.

And that's about all I can accomplish at this time.

You've done a lot tk. This summer has been unusually hot for us. The big oaks usually shade us but it seems the heat has come right through them this summer.

I know it can feel overwhelming when many things pile up waiting to be done but you've been steadily chipping away at the list. You must be proud and happy at all you've accomplished so far.

Well today I got the plywood cut to repair the shed and one side screwed in. I'll do the other side tomorrow. Then finish up the trim work. Hopefully I can finish all of that by tomorrow. There is so much to do before the apraisal on or around the 3rd of September.

I saw my neighbor leaving and couldn't figure out why he didn't ring the bell so I checked it. Dead batteries. So i rushed out to the store and bought some new ones.

Well today I made a new door for the shed. Found out the hole cut for the shed wasn't square. So I'm kind of fixing it with trim lol. So I'm cockeyed lol, some how that isn't suprising.

I also put enough screws in place to hold the other side in place.

Tomorrow I plant to finish the trim work. And begin painting weather permitting. It's suppose to be rainy all week but we haven't had a drop yet.

Lets see I went to make the trim today and broke the jigsaw. So I decided to paint instead. I used a half a gallon on the front of the shed and will need to use the rest to get it covered. At least I hope it will cover it. It's really absorbing into the wood.

Fortunately The Elliots came over and he fixed the jigsaw. He also said he would repair the siding for me and fix the shower that is raining water down the inside of the wall.

So that leaves me with the rest of the painting.

Well, that is certainly good news, So glad you have some handy friends.

Painting is not such a bad thing to be left with after all....

At least painting is something I am familar with. Of course I'm not going to have the paint to finish the shed. I think I need to do the fence and then do as much as the shed as possible.

Hey the easy way to outdoor paint, on hdtv, they use the rollers to do it.

The shed and the fence are white and the bathrooms will be cream. The deck is suppose to be redwood stain with a poly mixed in.

You have bathrooms in the shed an fence? Our dog does.LOL



My porch is red wood I dont put any thing on top of it . Just me.

my deck is treated lumber and is starting to show weathering damage on the top railing. I'm thinking off prying off the top rail and replacing it with new and then doing the stain. I think the red wood would look great with the white siding and black trim.

I use EXTERIOR LATEX RED WOOD STAIN on my porch. The posts are white.

I dont put water proof on it . Tryed to put oil based on it. DOnt sell it much any more. Mine does lift tho.

Tell me how you end up.

I use the exterior latex redwood stain on my picnic tables. works pretty good.

Well the only thing I've accomplished today with the threatening weather is to scrape my fence so it is ready to paint then the time comes.

tk, see if there was a guarantee on the treated lumber. Should be, but maybe not against warping...I have used tons of it in my landscaping business, and some remain straight, some bend and buckle. Redwood is fantastic, even cedar, no treatment needed, but stain or preservative can prevent splintering sometimes...otherwise, buy fir or spruce and treat with preservative, or the old fashioned but effective combination of 50/50 mineral spirits and castor oil, if you want to go organic. Multiple apllications are needed, but that's true of many stains as well as Thompson's Water Seal. Douglas Fir; will last for at least 5 or 6 years without treaing (except splinters here and their,) Spruce practically the same, you can put off treatment for months if not a year or two and it'll be fine.
All depends on what you can afford...I can't afford squat.
