Hello there.

At work we have some corn plants (dracaena fragrans). One of plants had a bare stalk with wax on top of it. I was questioning whether cutting off the top would encourage it to resprout. Right after I said that the owner of the plant pulled the cane out and asked me if I wanted to try it at home. When she pulled the cane out, I heard the "snap" of roots breaking, so I don't think it's dead.

Here's my question...

If I cut off the top, will it resprout leaves? I would really like to have a corn plant at home. It would be great to have one I was able to start off myself. I don't know if the length of it matters, but the stalk is just over a foot long.

All advice is appreciated.

Thanks.
Amanda

you can actually just nick it under one of the growth rings and it will sprout. you don't have to actually cut it.

Thanks Jiffy!

Would I make a small nick, like with a razor blade? Or a little deeper with a knife?

I forgot to ask another question...

Should I root this in water or soil?

Jiffymouse,
I have a corn plant that started sprouting little plants all over the stalk. I was going to repot it. Should I just let it go as is?

i think, thicker with a knife, not necessarily deeper. a razor would create a nick that could heal rather than sprout.

and sherri, i'd leave it as is and i'd even more love to see a picture!

I made cuts in my corn plants to see what happens with them. I have one pot with about three stalks that are about six feet high. I'll post a picture of them soon.

Okay, here they are!

^actually, my father-in-law did those plants. He gave them to us when he sold his business and decided to retire, (travels a lot). I am trying to learn...in fact, I am thinking about making pothos cuttings to fill up the bottom of the corn plant pot. It looks very plain and boring to me. (I think I need to start collecting empty glass jars to do this...lol)
