Independence Day is one of my favorite holidays. We have a big- sometimes huge-- party. And The Declaration is required reading.

Here Canada day is celebrated at the local Village, a parade, games and food, music from a band, and fireworks at night. Too crowded for me, but I try go every few years.

The neighboring town used to have it's homecoming on the weekend of the 4th. And there was/is always a huge parade.
But in the past few years they have switched it to the last weeeknd of June--I guess it is cheaper. rolz
Now all we have to look forward to here is family parties.
However, several surrounding towns have fireworks, so some years we go to see that.

The community college just down the road always does fireworks the weekend before July 4th because it is so much cheaper. They do an excellent job, with skydivers and some name bands performing, before it gets dark. We have gone every year, but this year it does not look like we are going tomorrow night.

I usually take my grand children to a parade but it's already over 100 here and the parade is at 1:00 so we may not go this year.

We used to have two fireworks shows to choose from to go see. Last year they were both cancelled. One of them was understandable, the other one just made people angry. We used to have a local bank call washington mutual and every year they sponsored a show. Well, they wen't bankrupt and were bought by chase, who did the show last year (they had acquired washington mutual and couldn't back out of that year's show). They announced that would not sponsor any more shows after that. People were already not looking forward to the bank switching to this major chain, now were even more unhappy because our other fireworks show was also cancelled after last year, due to lack of finances. In a city the size of Seattle (not to mention the super rich like Bill Gates and Paul Allen who live here) you'd think that there could be at least one show. Heck, cities that are only a fraction of the size of Seattle manage to pull it off. Anyway, some business owner last year got on the radio and challenged other business owners to chip in and give our big city the show it deserves. Not only did other businesses chip in, regular people were calling and donating. So, Seattle gets to have a show after all. Unfortunately the main park to see the show from won't fit even half the people that live here and the lake it's on has a lot of industrial areas and isn't really a big lake to begin with. There was no way we were going to try crowd ourselves in with the rest of Seattle for an hour to see some fireworks. Aros's dad invited us to go to his place to see the show (different city) by where he lives. Trouble is I can't drive my car that far because it's having problems again. So, I looked up a couple places online and was able to reserve a rental car for not too much money, just had to reserve it for two days since the 4th is a holiday. Ashley is going on a friend's boat and the rest of us are taking the rental car down to Aros's dad to BBQ and see the Des Moines show this year. Kids aren't disappointed and we're pretty happy with that plan too.
