I live in NY and Multiflora rose are so abundant, but being they are easy to grow many people grow them for yard cover or decor for their yard. They want to grow some from seed in pots so they can keep them looking nice from the start (all seeds that mature on the ground get mowed over), the mature roses get tangled and messy. How do you grow them from seed?
The hips usually are red by end of Summer or start of Fall, but can you open the hips and plant the seeds at that time, they said on Google the hips get leathery in Winter to protect the seeds? So when are the seeds fully mature, Summer,Winter, or spring?

why would u want to cultivate such an invasive awful plant .....they have taken over WV ......its in every fencerow and spreads like wildfire ....i would really reconsider and maybe buy a tame rose .....unless you have a farm and want to provide some kinda cover for rabbits or game birds .......

Upstate NY has plenty of open areas with plenty of wildlife, and this species of rose in a pot is not invasive, and can be pruned as needed to make it look very nice.
I understand where your coming from but I wouldnt have asked if I saw it as a problem, so if you could still help me with my question I would appreciate it.

The seeds are fully mature from roses in fall..I'll check for you..it should be the same process as regular rose hips.

I agree with dwolf419....they are also an invasive plant in Pa, where I live. You don't want them around, they spread and are nasty things to get rid of. Get a nice cultivated rose and skip the multiflora one. Go out and take a ride in the countryside and take a look in the pastures and fence rows........you will see how they overrun things. It is a weed
