I got an Arapaho blackberry cane a few days ago, and I still have yet to plant it. However, before I do plant it, are there any tips I can use for the blackberry plant? Anything would help, as I really don't know too much about blackberries. Things like the recommended soil type, fertilizers, pruning, trellising, and anything of that nature would be nice.

Blaclberriescan be trellised if you'd like. They fruit on the new wood, so they should be pruned yearly to contain their size and encourage more fruit. They prefer poor, samdy soil, so don't amend the soil or look for the richest soil on your property. Cultivated or thornless blackberries are very prone to diseases of wild blackberies, so plant as far as possible from wild ones and pull any wild plants that are close. Bone meal is good for producing fruit of any kind, mix in half a cup or so to each hole and it will provide phosphorous for a number of years, but don't add nitrogen, the plants will sprawl and produce poorer fruit.

I bought a thornless Blackberry from Wal-Mart for $5 this week. Great tips! I can't wait to plant it.
flwrIs there anything it shouldn't be planted near? I have blueberries, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, strawberries, watermellon, irises, lilacs, columbine, lavender, beardstongue, weigela, hostas, spinach, squash in the area I plan to plant.
flwrWhat distance should it be from plants it shouldn't be near?

I have a Blackberry bush, I keep it in it's own 2 and 1/2 ft space...away from other things.
Blackberries grow best in soil with a pH of 5.5 to 5.7..so don't plant it with your blueberries.
