Here is some backround:

last year I told Lynne that I saw a half barrel that I wanted to buy so I could have a water lily. (I have wanted one since I saw them on the fishing ponds when I was a kid)
This spring I bought the 1/2 barrel and began looking for a water lily.
The one place that had them, a nursery, said they would not be in until some time the first part of May.

So last week Lynne said she would look for me as she thought she could get them at a good price.--WELL!!! Guess what I got in the mail yesterday?? yep!!! a water lily, and a basket to plant it in--and it has nice sprouting growth and the surprise of 2 (or possibly 3) itsy bitsy flower heads!!!

The surprise?? It was all a GIFT!!!---Bless Lynne kissie :ding:

I will begin to give you all a photo narritive on what I did> grin

First I made a base out of 4 - 1 foor pavers, so the half barrel would be stable.

[Linked Image]

next I put the barrel on the pavers and filled it with water to give it time for the chemicals to settle & evaporate.

[Linked Image]

Here is the basket & the lily not quite filled with dirt
[Linked Image]

Story continues in next post>>>>>

So of course I forgot to take a photo of the basket after I had added the glass rocks & regular rocks on top of the clay soil. so after the water settled I took a photo thru the water--not so bad huh???
Not pictured, as I thought to add them later, are some clear/pearl butterfly shapped glass rocks.
grin

[Linked Image]

here is my last photo of the barrel after I added the basket

[Linked Image]

and the story gets even better--NOT!!!
I left the sides of the mesh and the moss on the tuber so Lynne recommended that I "at least" remove the mesh.--so I took the basket out & I removed the one side of the soil & took the mesh off, but I decided to leave the moss there.
--BUT, did I remember to take pictures before I returned the basket to the water?? nope!!! blush
ah well at least I "kinda" have pictures of what I did, huh???.

anyway you have the idea.

Carol - you did a fabulous job setting it all up!!! clap thumbup Your pictures are all so clear, and really show what you have done, and the barrel looks great!

I especially like the glass stones touch - you can really see them in the barrel - I wouldn't be able to do that in my pond, but I do like that idea for yours. luv

The tuber looks like it made the trip ok, and the leaves look like they actually grew a bit already since I bought it last Thursday! Can't wait to see it when the leaves reach the surface and the flowers follow shortly after! bop

Tamara-- thanks so much--and yes we DO have such wonderful friends here. kissie

Sheri--Diane thanks so much for your kind words---

About the water---
you know?? I had not considereed that--BUT I am told I will eventually need to transplant it to A larger basket--
So, If I need to change the water I am thinking that would be the time--??

however, ya know when it rains it will get new water, so perhaps I will not need to???
sounds like a question for the master gardener at my fav. nursery---well unless Miss Lynne knows the answer????

YOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO Lynne......

I hadn't thought about that, Carol! Not sure if you would need to change it out - I guess if it starts smelling stale it woud be a good idea? But then again... you probably don't want to disturb the lily once it starts growing? I'll look into it and see what I can find out.

OK, Thanks, Lynne.

ya know I guess I could always empty out say 1/2 of the water & re-add new--that way the chlorine & such would not be as strong for the 8 hrs or so it would take for them to evaporate or settle ???

What a fun project for you, Carol! And how nice of Lynne to help you out so!!

My concern is.... still water is a magnet for mosquitoes... what are you going to do to deter them? (It is shocking how many will breed in an abandoned tire filled with water....)

And my question is... why didn't you fill the barrel further up?

Merme - Carol bought a spray for the water that she says is supposed to keep mosquitos away. I have not heard of that, but did recommend mosquito dunks. They sell them here sometimes for people to put in stagnant pools of water.

In the last picture it looks like the water is filled to the top?

I used to put the garden hose in the bottom of my pot and let the water flow out the top- probably about 1/4 container at a time, maybe once or twice a week. That was enough to stop any mosquitoes breeding. Barrel looks great! Look forward to seeing how it does through the Summer- might inspire me to set mine up again ;O)

Thanks for the idea/advice gardeningmomma.

The spray I have is in a small bottle & will work for several hundred gallons of water. it is some natural chemicals that while not harmful to animals, plants or fish, will prevent there from being any tension on the water top.
Flys & mosquitos need tension to land & lay their eggs, No water tension, no landing, so no eggs & thus no larvae, etc.

But for right now my mosquitos have not arrived here yet.

still keeping my eyes out for dunks, though.

I took my mom to my favorite Nursery to buy her some flowers for her Mother's day gift--and I bought myself a "Water Hyacinth"
now I know they spread and that I will have to keep it pinched back but hey, How could I say No??? why

Tomorrow after it rains I will take a photo of it and of the progress that my lily has made, OK???

below is a picture of my water hyacinth.
It is going to spread like crazy, so I will need to pinch it back. I am told that the parts I pinch off would make excellent fodder for my compost pile--trouble being that I do not have a compost pile--- lol

Look--Finally one of my lily pads has reached the surface of the water-----there were 2 all ready to rest on the surface & then we got that huge 1 & 9/10 inch rain fall. but now it finally grew enough---
Sorry the photo is not better----the sun was so bright I could not tell where I was aiming at. why

Lynne says it will turn green with some sunlight.

That's sooooooo exciting Carol!!! It will definitely turn green once it warms up and stays warm. Remember to cut off the spent lily pads and blooms to make room for new growth.

I must apologize. Over time I have taken a few photos of the progress on my little half barrel here, but apparently I have not bothered to post them--my bad !!!! blush

so here is the latest pic. so sorry that the pots & such are showing.-
it is my plan to buy some smaller round bricks to put the blue eyed grass on, so it will be back towards the edge of the barrel giving more room to the lily--

---all those lily pads & not a hint of a flower yet--but hey, I can be a patient person---

I have 4 pads on the top of the water & 1 about 1/2 way up.

Thank you so much everyone---& a special thanks to gardeningmomma

OH Lynne, guess wht???
yesterday when I was removing some water from my barrel (along with the mosquito larva) I saw a lily flower bud--about 1--2 inches off of the pot.

Yea me!!! clap bop clap

I added 1/4 a Mosquito dunk (prescriberd amount) and some tension reliever to the water--hopefully I am safe from such as that now.

Today I got so upset with the murky water that I lifted the pot to the top of the water so I could see the buds.
I have 2 newer pads, about halfway to the top of the water, and 3, count them 3, flower buds. clap bop the last one is just barely above the dirt.

Sorry about the murky water, Carol, but again... so excited about the new growth!!! Have you tried running a hose in it to flush the water, like Esther on the pond forums does in hers?

Thanks, Lynne.
Last night I researched the cause because earlier I had read Esther's comments.
When I did flush out my water--well really I replaced half of my water--the algea began to escalte. Well it seems that the ecosystem had not had time to balance itself. They say fresh water is sometimes the cause.--That and too many fish, thus too much fish waste but I have no fish.
So for now I will have patience.
Then if things do not improve, there are other steps in say a week or 2, that I will look into.

now when I say too much fresh water, I mean too much clorinated & treated water.

Yes I forgot about the cycling of the water - one actually has to go through the pea soup algae stage before it clears up again. Sorry - my mistake.

That is sooooooooooooo pretty Carol!!! I'm so very happy for you!

I have come to think that most color labels are inaccurate. For example there are so many flowers that are called blue, when they are really purple. I think that often happens with reds and pinks as well.

But I do think this is a very pretty color either way!

on June 7th I had my 3rd water lily bloom--being a bit silly I thought to wait until my birthday to take a photo of it so it would have my B-day date stamped on it--well we all know how I got sick instead.--so no photo of my 3rd bloom sorry.

so yesterday I got my 4th blooming.--and today I noticed a 5th bud just breaking the surface. bop

below here is my 4th bloom:

What will you do in the winter?

I have no facilities to keep it over winter--unless I put it in a aquarium.
I think they are about that price but well so would a plant be right???

I have "mosquito dunks" in the water to kill the larvae--that and some type of spray that prohibits the mosquitos from landing on the water---
I think it is a fun idea, dodge.

Sorry guys - I don't know what to suggest for the barrel ponds other than to bring the plants indoors in an aquarium as Carol had mentioned before. I do belong to a ponding forum and can ask there for you to see what they might suggest.

This is what I heard back from a man named "pondman" in the ponding forums:

"Lynne, if there is no green house, they can trim them right back and store them in containers/kiddie pools inside the house."

thanks Lynne for all the trouble--that would be easier to do. thumbup

with them trimmed back I would think a smaller container, perhaps 2-5 gallon one would work ??? I do have a 5 gallon aquarium--I think I still have it
so they just sit in the water all winter & go dromant ???

Those are just great. I love your little water garden. I don't see a pump, is there one?

nope no pump. I have mosquito dunks in the pot that the lily is planted in.

and then I have this stuff that releases the tension on the water's surface so the mosquitos cannot land to lay their eggs. The 2 of them seem to be working very well.

BTW: Thank you so very much. bow

Ok I'm going to have to go back and read the posts rather than just look at the pretty pictures. I have no idea what a mosquito dunk is/are. I'd love to have a water garden with a lotus in it but one thing that always stopped me was the mosquito thing. I know those require water that is not moving.

not to worry---you can find them in nurseries, at wal-mart & at say lowes--on the back it says how to use them & how much.

I found the tension releaser stuff in a nursery that carried water plants. I bought a few small bottles but I think that one is going to last me all season.
really it is not as complicated as it seems I promise.

Plants N Pots is very knowledgable on this subject...she has given me lots of good advice.

but Dodge--try the local plant nurseries, the pet stores, & Lowes & home depot. ALSO---at a certain time of the spring Wal-mart will get a few in. Some stores do some don't.

I am so thrilled that your water lily keeps blooming for you!

I just bought some water hyacinth yesterday - didn't even realize it was 40% off til after we paid and they told us! Last year I soaked mine in miracle grow blossom booster in a small tub for a week and they did so much better in the pond after that!

Yesterday, the girl at the nursery said that miracle grow wasn't safe for the fish - I didn't have a problem last year? But I bought the recommended water plant fertilizer from them anyway, and am soaking the new WH for a few days - I've found that when I didn't do that the previous years, it just sat there and turned yellow and died. After soaking last year, they multiplied like crazy. Just a suggestion if you'd like yours to get a bit bigger - you can use the miracle grow since you don't have fish in there, right?

Thanks gardeningmomma.

Dodge--the water is not really too clean. murky is more like it. I do however have the mosquito dunks in the dirt I have teh lily planted in and then I spray the tension reliever on the surface of the water, that keeps the bugs out. I guess that helps it to look nicer. why

Lynne: My Water H was growing like a weed--but after the second time I pinched it back to keep it a smaller size, it stopped growing & is now dying back. But oh well--Since I am all about flowers anyway, I may not even buy any this next year.

Yea!!!!! My Water lily has bloomed again--2 times.

The first one bloomed on 8-9-10 but I didnt get a picture until 8-10-10

[Linked Image]

Then the next one came along, I first noticed the head the 11th.

I dont know if the first one is still blooming or if this flower is indeed the second flower--but either way you can clearly see there was/is a second flower..

This has been so much fun !!!

So cute, do they bloom more than once?

What will you do for winter?

they bloom for most of the day and then for 2 or 3 days, Dodge.

then when they have not bloomed for a day. I feel down & manually pinch them off with my finders as close to the dirt as I can safely get.

I have no idea what I am going to do for over winter. I guess I may either put it in an aquarium in my basement (or not). why

I really will need to talk to Lynne before I decide.

I also have no idea what I will do with my Picture/Pitcher plant.

Dodge one has to put them in a shallow wide pot (I have a basket type that Lynne sent to me) Then one puts some tomato fertilizer stakes in the dirt & THEN you submerge the pot into water...

I was thinking to put it in the aquarium by a window.
As I say, I will speak to Lynne about this.
She has done right by me so far...

DH must have done something with my camera cord---so I cannot upload my newest photo of my water lilies---
but here is the story:

The last one I posted was from the 8-13-10--which was # 10 & the begining of # 11.

Then I did not even take a photo of # 12 as I thought it would be the last one--
BUT Then on 8-24 I got my # 13--picture to come---
Then
yesterday I saw what was the beginning of # 14. \
I am in aw, not to mention very pleased, that one plant would give me so many flowers---I will be taking a photo of the latest flower today !!!

---Thanks again Lynne---

yes they apparently do... they bloom 1 at a time with the exception of twice when I got 2 at a time---
I pinch the flower off down at the base of the stem, by the dirt/pot, after it begins to go back down under the water's surface & soon the next one comes... why
