Is it just me or do other people have trouble with their ivy plants in winter? It seems by the time March rolls around I have to cut them back to start over...they lose their leaves in a matter of a week or so.
~~Tam~ You can bury all your troubles by digging in the dirt.
It must be a freezing winter thing, Tamara. Winter here is ivy growing season and I have been ripping it out to try to get rid of it. English ivy, hedera.

I had a beautiful ivy plant 3 yrs ago ...it sat outside and just ran wild over one summer ....carried it indoors and it turned brown and crispy before march too ......I kept it slightly watered and ran a humidifier in the florida room with all the other plants .......I too sadly am an ivy killer.....but i tried
mmmm mine is pretty warm too....i suspected my devilish white demon kitty was peeing in .....she ruined my citrus trees this year i was trying to root ...i should kick her out to the garage .......but she sits in my lap every night and then i forgive her .......
I think that in winter they are growing more than any warm or other season. I have not any plant at my home but my friend has that and is really in good conditions, coz it takes more care about that.thanks.
Tamara, I'm right with you on this. So is my Mom (who has probably over 100 houseplants that are thriving). I've killed several (at least 5) pots of ivy, I don't understand why. I had a hanging basket that did well for a few months, then BAM it just dried up and was dead. I've tried putting it outside on different occasions in the summer, and nomatter what I do it dies.
The longest I ever kept one was for several months when I lived in Georgia. I kept it hanging above the kitchen window and took it outside on the screened in porch for waterings. It did really well there, untill I moved back to Michigan!
I wish I could keep one alive and well, I love ivy!
Yikes! Now I am all freaked out! I got my first ivy about six months ago. I repotted it, and I put it in the bathroom. It got kind of leggy, so I pinned the stems back into the soil. They have rooted and frankly it is lush and has lots of new growth. I am not bragging, I am just hoping mine is not next. Actually, my mom has had one for years, vining all over her kitchen and it just died a month ago. Just dried up and died. She is still sad about it. Also, I heard that ivies were listed invasive (duh), and soon will no longer be avaiable for sale. Is that just in some areas or a bunch of malarkey?
Well, I can't say I know what I am doing, I think that plants just love my bathroom. Let's see... No direct sunlight for my guy(he sits on top of the toilet tank). I let him dry out a little in between liberal drinks. When he gets leggy, I pin the stems back into the soil with a paper clip. And anytime I am rooting something, I keep it moist- even succulents. That's about it. Oh and my bathroom is fairly humid at least once a day if not more thanks to hot showers. I just kind of ignore him. Maybe he likes me playing hard to get.=)
It seems to me that a houseplant Ivy does better in a humid room indoors. Like a bathroom. I used to have some long, long ago. It had to be misted often. I do however think they are worth the effort it takes.
