Thanks so much Carol! Nothing new to say yet - it's been downright freezing cold here this week - temperatures in the low 20's at night. It surprises me that the fish are still swimming at the surface this week. Thankfully we are going to warm up to near 80 on Sunday and I'm sure they will love that!

It is getting warmer now, and I was wondering how things are going with your wonderful pond ??. [color:#009900]

Well, with the very unusually warm weather we've been having, the pond is waking up rather quickly these days. The plants on the waterfall hill are growing nicely, and the water lilies are sending up a few red leaves to the surface already. Don put the UV filter in today, so we are hoping for clearer water any day now. thumbup

Here is the waterfall hill 2 days ago.

And today, after I've put a few pots and other items around.

Thanks so much, Carol and Tamara - you both are too kind!

The purple is tri-colored ajuga - it is flowering so beautifully this year after we had the rainiest March on record ever, and then the early warm temperatures. I can't believe it's been in bloom for a couple of weeks now and just gets prettier and prettier. I keep looking out the back windows to look at it!

Here's what the ajuga loooked like just 2 weeks ago when it first started blooming. I'll try and get a picture of it today in full bloom.

I took these pictures yesterday of the ajuga - it was a very overcast, hot and humid day, so the pictures aren't as clear as I would have liked. oh well...

Thanks Tamara and Sheri!

Tamara - ajuga can be quite invasive, so many people don't like to plant it. It can really run through grass/lawns and ruin them. That said... I planted it on the waterfall hills on purpose - I wanted something that would help keep the soil on the hills, as it tends to run down whenever we get a hard rain. The flowers this year are a much appreciated bonus for me! thumbup

Sheri - I call the blue balls my blue bubbles! lol They are glass balls that are sold in groups of 3, hanging in jute (hemp?) casings, at Christmas Tree Shops. These types of balls are usually sold in expensive shops at shore resorts - beaches, etc for ridiculously high prices, but CTS sold them for a few years for only $3.99. (they didnt have them last year unfortunately - I'd like to get some more.) When Don built the pond, I grabbed the ones that had the most/biggest blue ones. I have the other colored ones scattered around my gardens.

Come on down, Tamara! thumbup

Today my first water lily of the season bloomed open! It's always so exciting to see them, and the first one gets special attention!!!

See all the fishies swimming near to get their pictures taken as well? lol
[Linked Image]

Close-up - see the other 2 buds about to open, and the other small one still in the water?
I'm so elated that they are starting to bloom so early in the season - I think they first started last year in July. Hopefully they will keep going as the summer progresses.

Here is a new plant I got about 1 1/2 weeks ago - potted it up and Don put it in the pond for me this past Saturday.

It's a purple pickerel and is supposed to get purple flowers all summer.

Dodge - most of the plants I have in my pond sit on the shelves that Don built into the sides, so they are higher than the pond floor. The only ones that sit in the bottom are the water lilies, and the new hogwort I got the other day.

Thanks Dodge. kissie

Yes, if they are happy they produce new rhizomes attached to the mother plant. You can cut those off and pot it up in a new pot to start another plant. I did that earlier this spring. There is a ponding forum that I belong to, and people trade or sell their divisions when they are available.

It's spawning time again for my comets! nervous At least 2 of my poor females are being chased relentlessly since early this morning. I can't bare to watch - it's EXHAUSTING!!! shock One poor lady is getting tossed up in the air frequently in the chase. I so hope she doesn't come into harm - she's one of 2 mostly white with just 2 spots of orange on the top of her head which helps distinguish her from the rest. Poor baby.
