Thanks so much Carol! Nothing new to say yet - it's been downright freezing cold here this week - temperatures in the low 20's at night. It surprises me that the fish are still swimming at the surface this week. Thankfully we are going to warm up to near 80 on Sunday and I'm sure they will love that!

It is getting warmer now, and I was wondering how things are going with your wonderful pond ??. [color:#009900] [b] [/color][/b]

Well, with the very unusually warm weather we've been having, the pond is waking up rather quickly these days. The plants on the waterfall hill are growing nicely, and the water lilies are sending up a few red leaves to the surface already. Don put the UV filter in today, so we are hoping for clearer water any day now. thumbup

Here is the waterfall hill 2 days ago.

And today, after I've put a few pots and other items around.

Thanks so much, Carol and Tamara - you both are too kind!

The purple is tri-colored ajuga - it is flowering so beautifully this year after we had the rainiest March on record ever, and then the early warm temperatures. I can't believe it's been in bloom for a couple of weeks now and just gets prettier and prettier. I keep looking out the back windows to look at it!

Here's what the ajuga loooked like just 2 weeks ago when it first started blooming. I'll try and get a picture of it today in full bloom.

Thanks Tamara and Sheri!

Tamara - ajuga can be quite invasive, so many people don't like to plant it. It can really run through grass/lawns and ruin them. That said... I planted it on the waterfall hills on purpose - I wanted something that would help keep the soil on the hills, as it tends to run down whenever we get a hard rain. The flowers this year are a much appreciated bonus for me! thumbup

Sheri - I call the blue balls my blue bubbles! lol They are glass balls that are sold in groups of 3, hanging in jute (hemp?) casings, at Christmas Tree Shops. These types of balls are usually sold in expensive shops at shore resorts - beaches, etc for ridiculously high prices, but CTS sold them for a few years for only $3.99. (they didnt have them last year unfortunately - I'd like to get some more.) When Don built the pond, I grabbed the ones that had the most/biggest blue ones. I have the other colored ones scattered around my gardens.

Come on down, Tamara! thumbup

Today my first water lily of the season bloomed open! It's always so exciting to see them, and the first one gets special attention!!!

See all the fishies swimming near to get their pictures taken as well? lol
[Linked Image]

Close-up - see the other 2 buds about to open, and the other small one still in the water?
I'm so elated that they are starting to bloom so early in the season - I think they first started last year in July. Hopefully they will keep going as the summer progresses.

Here is a new plant I got about 1 1/2 weeks ago - potted it up and Don put it in the pond for me this past Saturday.

It's a purple pickerel and is supposed to get purple flowers all summer.

Dodge - most of the plants I have in my pond sit on the shelves that Don built into the sides, so they are higher than the pond floor. The only ones that sit in the bottom are the water lilies, and the new hogwort I got the other day.

Thanks Dodge. kissie

Yes, if they are happy they produce new rhizomes attached to the mother plant. You can cut those off and pot it up in a new pot to start another plant. I did that earlier this spring. There is a ponding forum that I belong to, and people trade or sell their divisions when they are available.

It's spawning time again for my comets! nervous At least 2 of my poor females are being chased relentlessly since early this morning. I can't bare to watch - it's EXHAUSTING!!! shock One poor lady is getting tossed up in the air frequently in the chase. I so hope she doesn't come into harm - she's one of 2 mostly white with just 2 spots of orange on the top of her head which helps distinguish her from the rest. Poor baby.

Finally caught ... on camera!!! lol thumbup

I've been trying to get at least one of the many dragonflies by my pond to sit still long enough for me to take a picture. This one cooperated nicely for me today.

On a sunflower bud

Then nearby on a tomato stake I have at the pond to keep the heron away!

And here is my new this season purple pickerel in bloom

One more picture for today - a new canna for me this year in my large pot - it's supposed to be shorter than the ones I've been growing, but also orange flowers. Unfortunately Jimmy's cannas bit the dust this year - they were so huge and beautiful for several years. luv tears

Well I just so happened to take a few pictures today, so I am glad to oblige you Carol! lol thumbup

This is my very first yellow water lily - I am very pleased with the color and size - especially since it was a very small rhyzome from PetSmart - a no-name inexpensive one - the type the ponders on the forum I frequent sometimes frown upon. Oh well... their loss!

[Linked Image]

Here is another plant on the side shelf in the pond. At first I was not very impressed with it when I only saw the tight flower spikes for weeks, but it is now opening up and adds nice dimension to the pond.

Lizard's Tail - aptly named, I think! thumbup

Continued from above...

This was a baby fish from my comets from last summer. Only 2 survived and they are doing well - they start out mostly black in color - I didn't know that, and have found the color transformation very interesting. It has mostly changed now, with just a bit of black left on the top. I do like this color and hope it doesn't darken up so it's different from the others. The other black baby hasn't started to change yet - I am trying to get a picture of it while black, but it's too fast for me! lol

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

More fish at feeding time. Like the "sunbows" in this picture? A new name I made up for the colors from the sun reflecting in the water! why
[Linked Image]

One more showing my only koi - the yellow fish - it has been growing so much faster than the other fish - it's way bigger than they are, and a year younger!

Just wondering if the frog colors changed to match that green container. They do change colors to match the background. So do the butterflys.

This frog is actually a Rana clamitans, commonly known as a "green frog". It doesn't change colors, but always has that green area around the mouth.

Time to start up this thread again. Been doing lots of work in and around the pond the past 3 days, and the fish are excited to see us and eat when we feed them. Today I threw bits of oranges in - they gobbled them right up.

Here are some of them eating the flakes we give them twice a day.

It's time to come and sit for a spell, the weather is glorious today!

Here is what you would see from that vantage point.
Six water lilies blooming today.

[Linked Image]

And here's what you would see from the other side, sitting on the arbor bench.

Diane - you can use the blue chair (Don made it and it reclines!) and Carol and I can share the arbor bench. There's always room for more as well.

This guy thought he would not be seen this morning, but I caught him with my camera.
What's more pondlike than a frog sitting on a lily pad next to a water lily or 2?!? luv thumbup

[Linked Image]

He hopped towards the plant that he usually hides in, but stopped on this pad on the way.
LEAP FROG!

This frog is larger than the ones we usually see around the pond, and was just sitting on this flat rock at the edge of the pond last evening - he sat there for hours! He let me get up front and personal for some nice shots, so I took them from all sides. luv

We've had 2 days of torrential rains now. Fortunately, Don installed an overflow pipe into the skimmer last week, so we don't have to run out in this rain and let some water out of the pond to avoid overflowing.

This was the view from our deck yesterday in between severe thunderstorms. The water lilies seem to be loving this weather - lots of blooms so far this year! thumbup luv

As you both know, Diane and Carol, there hasn't been any time to even really glance at the pond lately, as I am only home to sleep every other night. But I did notice that Don turned the waterfall on very early this year since we've had such unusually warm temperatures and the water is already very cloudy.

I did notice the other morning that there are 5 lily pads up at the surface - again very early for that. It's too early to clean the plant pots and divide the plants. I just hope things can hold off for a while until I can get back into gardening.

That beautiful pond puts mine to shame, but hopefully over the years it will get better! My pond is as much for the birds as it is enjoyable for me to watch the birds. We have a bird bath inside the pond with a water pump that keeps the water circulating. In the winter I have a small heater that keeps the water from freezing. When the sun comes back out I'll take a picture and post it. My question is...can I grow lily pads in my pond? I've never really thought about growing plants in my pond, as we are a zone 3, but after looking at your beautiful pond, Purl One, I may have to investigate! Thanks for the pictures.

Thanks Carol and Bobbie.

Bobbie - you can definitely grow water lilies in your pond. Carol now grows them in a 1/2 barrel after we discussed at length how jt could work. I would suggest speaking with her about jt since she has had success.

I took a minute this morning, before returning to the hospital, to look over the pond. Carol, you will be happy to hear that there were 4 full grown frogs around the pond. It's only a matter of time before they will be singing their hearts out doing their mating game again!

So you can't winter a water lily over? I guess that is what I want to get away from. I would love any tips on water lilies. I did look into it once, but that was before getting a stock tank heater for my pond and I drained the pond in the fall. But the past 2 winters we have been successful with keeping the pond water running that maybe now I am ready to try a few plants in there!

ok, so I don't know a lot--Lynne does over winter her lilies, though and so---I think one cuts them down & puts them into the bottom of the pond so they will not freeze then in the spring you possibly re-pot them & add tomato fertilizer spikes, and set them up to where they will set in the pond for the summer.

I just have no place to over winter my lilies, so I just let them die....

Luckily I have a meeting this Sat in a town a couple of hours away on Sat...and there is a town in-between that has a wonderful nursery. Think I'll stop and see what they have to offer! I'll let you know what I find and what I buy. Kind of excited about this party

Last night I went back and read through every single thread having to do with your pond. It is GORGEOUS!! This past September we had horrible flooding and we found a small heavy plastic pond insert laying in the road. We left it alone for 3 days and nobody took it, so I claimed it. Now I'm just trying to figure out where to put it!

Well, Lynne, mine won't be as awsome as your pond, but tomorrow I plan on getting some pictures on here. I bought a water lily, a few gold fish, and a pot of star grass for my pond. I just got home and it is too late today to put them in my pond, so I just put some pond water in a few containers and put my new plants in the containers and put them in the green house for tonight. I'll introduce them into the pond tomorrow and take a few pictures! The water lily won't have a flower yet, but they are supposed to be a hot pink applaud The guy at the nursery said they should winter over just fine because of the heater I put in the pond in the winter. grin

In the first picture you can really see the "stars" on the top of the grass. The lily isn't much yet, but I'm just happy to have one flwr

Thanks, all, I see the pond/bird bath outside my work room window and when I need a break I can just sit and watch the birds bathe and preen, and now I get to watch my lily grow!!

A couple of the numerous frogs we have in the pond this year decided to pose for me the other day. Some will sit and let me be very close, while others jump immediately into the water when someone approaches. These 2 sat for quite a while the other day.

Here is a sideview of the waterfall this week. Plants are just starting to fill out around the pond now. Especially with all the rain we've had allllll week! rolz

Thanks Diane and Jenn!

Diane - I have seen dragonfly nymphs, but I think it's too early for full grown ones to be around - it's pretty cool here still - highs only in the low 60's.
