Is this considered an ornamental. When I pinched it back this morning I noticed that it was very pungent. Is it still considered edible?

I don't know if there is basil that is just ornamental, or not? I do know that regular edible basil can have different smells at different times of the year, and especially smell and taste different depending on how much sun it gets. the basil I have doesn't have much of a smell at all. I love the purple flowers and the foliage so I keep it around as a companion plant.

Ciao all-

Purple Ruffles Basil is most definitely indeed edible. It's at its best when shown off fresh in salads, particularly Italian Caprese Salad with fresh mozzarella and tomatoes with good fruity extra-virgin olive oil and a high quality balsamic vinegar.

Here it is growing last year:

I try to take one day at a time -- but sometimes several days attack me at once.
