I built a elevated garden box out of recycled wood. I drilled holes in the bottom to allow water to drain and lined the sides with the black cloth you get to prevent weed from coming up. I added the black liner to help protect the wood a little and so the drain holes would not get cloaked up. I added wheels to it so I can move it around.

I put two backs of garden soil in that I bought from HD.

The question is what should I plant in it.

I live in Hawaii, and it is in full sun, but with the wheels I can move it to partial shade as well.

My wife would like potatoes but I am having a hard time finding them. I thought about a lettuce bed?

Something that is easy as this is really my first attempt at anything big other than tomatoes.

I recommend using certified seed potatoes, but if they aren't available, you can just use potatoes you buy at the grocery store. potatoes are very easy to grow.
How deep is your planting bed? Other than making the bed portable, is there a reason why you put a wooden bottom on it?

Raised bed gardens

The is about 18 inches deep. No reason other than the portablility and here in Hawaii I don't have a big yard.

I read I could not use normal potatoes you buy from a store because they were treated so they would not sprout?

I know that a lot of potatoes are treated but not all of them. (I don't know if the treatment is mandatory in Hawaii )
Whenever I buy potatoes, I end up with the last of the batch being sprouted before I get around to eating them.

I also usually find sprouted potatoes in my veggie drawer if I don't use up the entire bag in a timely fashion. I have even used some to grow vines in mixed planter containers outside - regular potatoes and sweet potatoes gave very nice viney leaves.

I arent in Hawaii either, but mine sprout an get soft an yucky.

Yea, My wife just said we have had some sprout before so I will try it. I just planted 3 each, cut one into thirds adn planted to two eyes facing up.

Hope that is right? How long to you start seeing anything? Water everyday?

You need to set the cut sections in a dry, airy place for a day or two to let the cut sides callous over for a day or two before you plant them or they will rot before they root in the ground. You should see growth beginning in a week or two. Water well after planting but let the soil begin to dry before watering again. When the plants start to produce healthy foliage, you should water more often.

One idea is using organic potatoes or potatoes that have no GMO (Genetically Modified.) They sprout quite quickly so I am pretty sure they don’t have that chemical.

I found some seed potatoes at Lowe's here in Hawaii. I used them and will see how they do. This is my first potato try since being raised in Ky.
