Here are my bird pics from today. First a NEW bird to my yard AND camera. A Tennessee Warbler, discovered by Alexander Wilson in May, 1803 near Clarksville, Tennessee, this bird doesw NOT stay in Tennessee, it Migrates through twice a year and this one is migrating through VERY late in the season!

If you have House Sparrows, the males WILL have the reddish brown. ALL male House Sparrows do. You just need to catch it in the RIGHT light.

Yes, I have seen MANY Owls! I have one that perches on the roof of my house, DIRECTLY over the spot where my computer is, in spring. It is a Barred Owl.

We have Bald Eagles here, but I have NEVER, in my life seen ANY type of LIVE Eagle. Not even in a zoo. Seems strange, I know to devote your life to studying birds and never see an Eaqle but that's the way it has happened so far. I am not particularly upset about not seeing one. If I see one I'll say, "Hey look, an Eagle......NOW WHERE DID YOU SEE THAT PIGEON!!!!? The chances are VERY good for me to see a Bald Eagle any day now, I just don't know when.

Years ago, when I worked for the Dept. of Wildlife, I had the privilege of rescuing an injured Bald Eagle that I found out in a field. I held him in my arms for two hours while we waited for the bird rescue people to come and take him to the hospital.
I could tell that 'George' knew that I was only there to help him because he held onto my arm very gently with his talons as I stroked his head to calm him. (We wrapped him in a towel to keep him from trying to fly off, which would have hurt us both) It was one of those once in a lifetime moments I will never forget!

Unfortunately, George passed away two weeks later... tears

That is very good, Willy. I don't do animal rescue but have the contact numbers for people in my area that do. I saved a House Sparrow once that got her leg caught in my suet feeder. She did fine. Earlier this Summer I had a man bring me a Cooper's Hawk that had flown into the windshield of his car. Luckily the bird was only slightly stunned and recovered just fine while we were looking at it.

My tiny dog ToDeTa barks constantly when she's out in the yard. I noticed 5 hawks circling our yard. I picked her up, took her inside and when I went back out they were sitting in a pecan tree.

That's not a hawk. That's a Black Vulture! Those are my FAVORITE Vultures. Wen they fly overhead and you look straight up, you can see white circles in the underside tips of the wings that we call, "Headlights". I saw TWO Black Vultures on the shoulder of the road one block from my house yesterday, eating a dead possum. I wasn't able to get a picture.

I like them because they are the LESS common of the two vulture species we have in the U.S. The two we have are Turkey Vultures and Black Vultures. BOTH species are found through much of the U.S. and Canada. Black Vultures scavenge for dead animals along creek, river, lake, and pond edges AND along roadsides. Black Vultures are the prettier of the two, Have shorter almost non-existent tails, they flap their wings a lot more than Turkeys when flying, and the angle of their wings are perfectly FLAT. A Turkey Vulture has a "V" shape to their wings when soaring. Black Vultures also look VERY Egyptian!

So I guess I don't have to worry about my little dog yapping and running around like a crazy dog.

Do turkey vultures and black vultures hang out in the same areas?

One of them sat in a tree the whole time I was in the yard and didn't move. For a while I thought it was a clump of leaves or debris instead of a bird. I read that they don't built nests in trees. Wonder if there are eggs somewhere around my yard.

Turkeys And Blacks are in the same area. As a matter of fact< they often hang together in flocks. Vultures tend to nest on ledges and small shallow cavities of rock cliffs. They do that here in Middle Tennessee where we are solid limestone with towering cliffs everywhere and over 2,000 caves of all sizes.
