See, I've got a really really big tree in my backyard, so the grass behind it is very... dead. It's full of moss and weeds and dirt and mud. I want to plant some grass there, hopefully something that can choke out the ivy and moss on the ground. But it's very dark there, it gets sun maybe from sunrise to noon in the darkest spots.

Any advice on a seed for this problematic area?

Would you consider creating a "shade garden" in this area?

There are many ideas in this forum that you could use.

grass in the shade is a very tough call.
my backyard is mostly shaded and i can get some nice coll season grasses to grow,as soon as it gets hot, even with major watering, dies back. i always hear of grass seed that will grow anywhere but i have never found one to be 100% successful.

Even a tough groundcover has a hard time when used in place of grass under trees. Dense shade coupled with the tree getting all the moisture does grass in.

Mulch the tree to the drip line. Put shallow rooted shade loving plants at the drip line. If you choose to mulch don't cover any exposed roots. Keep the mulch six inches from the trunk.
