teach Two or three years ago I announced that I was going to redesign and oomph up The Garden Helper pages.... We we all know what happened in the past two years... and it wasn't new pages! notme

teach Five years ago I had the same brain fart with the same end of story..... There was no "new look" for TGH that time either. blush

docs Well.... I have some more work to do on the template page, but I think I will make it farther this time (maybe???) took me twelve year to figure out how to make transparent gif... I think I may have figured out a couple other tricky thingys too. idea

why I would like your input as to primarily and most importantly if the page loads and functions properly and then general impression of the column setup.... Forum Feeds.... color matching.... the buttons.... My (Willy's) entrance and dialog.... badday

rolz I will find a place to archive the pages as I replace them, but f you have been around here for any length of time, you may want to take a last peak at The Garden Helper Home Page that has stared back at you for the last many years before you look at....

haha Only time will tell.... Thank you! bow

In the original post, the link under the spoiler. I clicked on that and then Wild Willy was traveling up to see me. The first line of the text had said something along the lines of "wow, you're up late." I just clicked on it now and it says, "good evening."

Along with the scrolling box of Threads one can read then click & go to full content,,, will you be placing a window view box of flowers or veggie pictures members have posted? or a Mystery picture box one could then click on to view full content?

I especially Love the Childrens Garden and How you dedicated that page to your mom, then gave excellent examples of how to do simple meaningful tasks in and for the garden with Children.
That page will be a great learning tool for young moms and Grandparents to spend time in the garden with kids thumbup luv

I think perhaps example # 2 is easier to read.

Thank you! That is the kind of input I need!

The fonts and their colors are yet to be set in example one, and I have a lot of polishing to do. This template will be used for Photo Galleries, Screensavers, web cam and other visual pages.

Example two will be for individual "plant profile" type pages.... I still have a few bugs left to fix.

The "Home Page" template will be used for the primary directory pages.... I still have a couple tiny little bugs on that one.....

I may have a problem with this page. I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know how everything "fits", specifically if all the links in the lower left column fit into single lines. Different screen resolutions could easily change the look from ordered to helter skelter... so I need to know.

On my screen (15") I have to scroll side-to-side to see the whole thing. But that is easy enough to do. I have to scroll right to see the sidebar.
I am just not happy with scrolling to the side to be able to read a complete sentence in a post. I can make the font on the page smaller and it all fits but then my old eyes have difficulty reading.
I am not sure that helps you at all. I love the design of it all and it is easy to navigate.

docs I have been working a lot on the meta tags for the search engines to hopefully find the pages better. Lots of work goes into this stage but you will never see any sign of it. I'm also having a few little bugs with the flash stuff..... Its coming along...

Over the years, when I've written pages I normally put a thumbnail picture appropriate to the topic. Clicking the thumb would bring up a page with the full size pix for wallpaper or whatever. These hundreds of pages have about 30 different backgrounds and color schemes unrelated to each other....

This is one of the plainer versions, but it is typical of all of them.

I'll use this template for all the photo pages, videos, screensavers, graphics, Christmas cookies and other such things.... if it works....

why

Q1... Does the initial screen view show everything besides the last column, or is more missing?

Q2... This page had a bit different layout. Do pages like [url=http://www.thegardenhelper.com/]TGH Home Page[/url} require scrooling as well? Same amount.

Q3... If one of you side scrollers is brave enough to investigate... I think that a different screen resolution might make a big difference for that page and may possibly even make the forum look better on your computer.

idea I'm just fishing here...

A3> What did you say? why
lol I'm not sure how to mess with my screen resolution other than making everything smaller (Ctrl/scroll button together). Then I can't read much even with my glasses. Is that altering the screen res? Or is that something scary like messing with the basic settings that a low tech person such as myself will end up messing everything up?

I didn't mind the scrolling much as long as it doesn't make me scroll to complete a sentence or worse back and forth for a paragraph. I get visually lost then and headache-y.

I didn't change anything....
To adjust your screen res, right click on the desktop, then pick properties then settings. The control panel will give you several res options. When you try a setting you will get about 15 seconds to quick check the view... click to keep or it reverts to the original settings. If you don't like the choice you can change it again. If the fonts come out too small but the rest looks great, you can fix the font.....

My problem with changing the screen res is that a couple other sites I go to (most notably Webkinz) requires a certain res or it doesn't work properly. I'd have to get a lot better at ducking into the phonebooth and changing than I am. But I haven't logged into Webkinz in a while so maybe....

teach The first time you browse a site (or in this case, page) it will take your browser a second (mili-second) longer to assemble the tables. and the tables might not pull completely together. The next time, your browser remembered how to put the puzzle together and had time together to shove everything to the left, like I told it to. In this instance, the "table data squishit factor" ( teach that's a coding term....) was equivalent to the distance you were having to scroll across the columns....
I sure hope that you're buying into my explanation as to why you didn't have to scroll the page on the second visit.....

Well,,, uhhhhh... rspb

ANYWAY! That's my story and I am sticking to it!!! bow

But the buttons work ....

The buttons should change to an "electric gold" font when mouse over them. If you pause the curser over the link you should get a little "info window" about the link.... (no, not a popup) Do you?
Is the Video Machine down there???
Did you say you use Firefox?
Is it Friday yet??

My buttons do not change font colors but I do get the info window. It is gold.
I don't see a video machine. Under the window options on the left I only have google ads. Under thw hot topics on the right, only more ads.
I do use firefox.
It is Friday.
I also love the gnome on any page taking you back to home.

Check your security settings to see if you've allowed javascript. You can set permissions to allow TGH to feed you flash and java. (I wouldn't allow it if it wasn't safe for my use on the site) You miss seeing a lot of shiny grin pretties without the Java

Do the buttons change for anyone besides me?

The buttons do not change color for me either. When I place my house over them a description comes up. For example, if I place my mouse on Indoor Bugs, it says House Plant Pests. I don't see a video machine. why

.... back up from the basement. teach Both the buttons and the Vid player worked for me in Firefox, IE and Chrome... but then they would because I am their creator and they know about my delete finger..... I did observe that with Firefox when I clicked on Shadow, the entire picture frame lit up in neon green..... This was totally unexpected and rather shocking since I didn't put in any light bulbs over there... Its not even an electric picture frame! idea

This can only mean a couple of things....
notme I suppose some innocent soul could have accidentally misplaced a tag or a snippet and is already checking the code....

~~~~ OR ~~~~
The Gremlin that haunted my mystery drive a while back has returned yet again, If thats the case, it will be resolved with a shiny new computer.
~~~~ OR ~~~~

Since I am the only person to have ever seen these phenominums, maybe they are just plain old buttons and picture frames and TV sets and pictures that don't squishit and scarey sounds coming out of the computer and the absolute silence inside a vaccuum until he screams.... he won't stop... please make him st......

teach Module "c17" somehow fell out of place. Its back now and hopefully will work as remembered....

You know those 404 error pages at dead ends?
Ours looks like this one now.

I finally got my first ever page (this one) to be validated as "error free" by the W3C Yuppitys who make all the coding rules up just in time to have to start revising them all over again. They even gave me this Smurfy little button to put somewhere on the page...

I decided to test it out on ie instead of firefox. To see if it is different. It is back to scroll to the side on ie and after several times x-ing out of the page and reclicking the link and several times of refreshing, it remains 'unsquished'. No bells and whistles and different colors pop up for me. Other than the scroll thing it is just the same as it is on firefox.
Bill, I am not complaining. Just trying to report what I see.

I love the way this page tells you you have come to the wrong place. It doesn't leave you feeling uncomfortably like you tried to go on forbidden ground like some do.
And the title is stationary up at the top of the page. I had to go back and look again.

The Magical Mystery page is RIGHT HERE

The video button isn't a button, Its a cute little blue TV set, directly below Willy.

I had a minor brain fart, and I think I might know the answer... maybe...........

I'm not giving up until I'm either committed or I prove the existence of the magic buttons

I went an looked to Bill... the buttons turn gold when I click on them and the banner does look like it floats to me ... I see the tv...and watched some of the videos... the list kind of covers the tv unless you close it so maybe thats why we don't see it right away as a tv...I use IE too and can see them without scrolling on both my laptop and desktop...

OK Bill..... your little "TV" works great. clap

The buttons on the left side light up gold when I put my cursor over them-- thumbup--
BUT to see the buttons AND all of Shadow I have to scroll side to side. why

not to mention some forums go really big while others stay what I consider normal.

right now, in this thread to see the whole screen I would have to scroll over about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch---but that is no big deal---- what I am missing is just the outside edge of the shout box, and what surrounds it on the right side--and not seeing that is no problem.

PS On a main page like the one showing ALL that Banter Hall has to offer things are just perfectly positioned. thumbup

Ok, Bill. I took a screen shot of what I see and I will describe what happens.
First I cut off the right side because it was too large and didn't resize like I wanted it to. So the right side has ads in a white box.
[Linked Image]
The buttons on the right do turn gold now.
The frame around Shadows gorgeous smile turns green when clicked on
But the title on the top is firmly affixed

Usually I can use the horizontal squishit factor to make a columned page self adjust to fit any screen or resolution but in the case of the Shadow page, each column had something with a defined width (Google ad is 728 px, the TV set is 275 px etc) The only column that has any squishability is the main one. It can be any size over 728px. teach If you add the 4 totals together, you can plainly see that the obvious solution is for all of you to get new monitors!

Anyway... The long and short of the story is that having four columns caused some people to have to scroll. The page just can't sqhuishit itself enough. I don't feel too bad making you scroll sideways once in a while, but since this design template will be used universally on hundreds of pages throughout TGH I changed it a bit to make it more user friendly...

docs I value all of your input! With it I will be able to make changes as I move through my project. Please let me know how this puppy works for you....

1) Well first--neenee--gee if I could get a bigger Monitor I would-lol-
but I am lucky to have the computer I do.--Bless my DD for that one. :ding:

2) That page is great---the pic of Shadow and all the buttons are great.
The only scrolling I have to do is if I want to see the ads on the right side.

All else is just perfectly situated. clap

Well, it will only show two topics for me. The current forum and one about composted manure. But I just figured that was because you hadn't completely set it up yet.

Try direct clicking just the feed title at the top. I may need to fix the colors to show the actual link betterer....

The current forum and one about composted manure.
I think it should show 3 leads from each of 5-6 forums.... hmmmmmmmmm

My problem on checking these things initially is that my computer caches everything and then later doesn't realize that she is supposed to look for FRESH loads. Sometimes I don't know what is onsite and what is inside Babe's brain... I am glad I have this topic to find out this stuff before Papa Google looks at it... nervous

Each feed should park and display for 7-8 seconds before the next feed quickly slides into place. Is that roughly what you are experiencing? When you have the page up, try holding down ctrl when you hit refresh and see if there is a change.... please?

yes teh 7-8 second display is what I see

Ok I did as you asked and nope no change---I even did it a few times in case i didnt know what I was doing (which is likley the case)

now when I say no change--the page refreshes but things remain the same and it will not link me to any of the posts---except for the first one that says the garden helper

BTW: I tried one of the links on the "ads by Google" and I went right to it.

But Carol I only got two feeds before. So something is improving. So I am reporting improvements. And I am pretty techno-challenged myself. I am easily frustrated with computer things when they don't work. I walk away often enough.

I can't help but stress when I do things like this
... a genetic flaw in gnomes. Out of the blue I started to wonder about the calendar images and if they changed like they are supposed to and I came here just to ask if someone would please check.

As for the flower... well there was a cat kitty cat right behind it when I took the picture and you're just not looking at it from the right angle! neenee

I just noticed that on mouseout (after the curser moves beyond the link) most of the pix revert to the text mode, but a few seem to stall and leave a kitty sitting pretty. Do you get instant on/instant off on all month buttons? why

no it is not instant on every one. every time. And they don't always all revert to the month after passing by or the mouse leaving the area altogether. When I closed the page it was all cats(+1 flower)

There is a delay on each calendar sq before kitties appeared for me; some went back to text month while others remained with "kitties" on it. Each month went to appropriate link per month thumbup

I changed the script to the same one that changes the buttons on the blue page, but used the same images as with the script from 1999. I will come back and completely remake the calendar later. Its good enuff for right now.... (actually, I just need a change of scenery for a while.
...)

The photo pages that go with the thumb pix on the calendar pages are all in place (I think)
I've moved on to my "wood" template. I just tossed my umpteenth "test" and am starting over again. If I wasn't so pig headed, I would have had this on site 3 years ago... rolz This template will be used for the simple subject pages like "pansy".
I need to fix some gaps, smudges and squishit issues before it is ready.

It worked for me Bill. and all of the links I tried worked too. I do have a little question. On your home page it says to click on the gnome to get 'home' again. And up there by the home button and title there is a little gnome that doesn't link. Is it supposed to?

So you don't think that Willy and I got lost or ran away or something....
We are starting over on the TGH makeover again from scratch, using a whole new program writing system (Fireworks). Hopefully I picked a good program because it cost 20 times what my original html editor cost! haha
Hopefully, this should eliminate all the browser and system based issues about objects wandering, squishability and most importantly, coding correctness. The only trouble is that I have to learn lots of new alien stuff and my brain keeps resisting.... I'm too old to have to start thinking again! rspb

docs I'll letchya know...

It may look the same (basically), but down inside it was remade again. The coding is stable enough now that I can add a couple bangles before moving back to the next template. I ended up using Adobe Dreamweaver to help with reconstructing my obsolete coding. It's awesome! thumbup but my brain still hurts... egad

teach Another very important step in making web pages is to make sure that the pages will be viewed reasonably well in a wide range of browsers and operating systems. Way back when I made the original pages I only had IE and Navigator, which "usually" let the pages show. This time around, I found a site which let me check my pages on 60 different OS/browser combinations from different parts of the world... when you can connect to them. (some going back to I.E. 2.0 on an early Windows sys.)
The results I got with my "correctly coded and validated" page showed me that no matter how hard I try, my pages will probably never be visible to everyone, everywhere, all the time.

For my own amusement I ran 6 TGH pages including the Forum through the system. A couple results made me LOL so I thought someone else might enjoy a giggle as well. I put together a slide show with 180 of the results. It takes a minute or two to load but then you can just click the auto-go button, sit back and have a breakfast
This won't be a permanent page.... its not even a page for that matter... just a temporary boredom breaker idea

Either my page has had a massive growth spurt, or Willy has become the Incredible Shrinking gnome... Fix a bug... find a bug... fix a bug... find two bugs lol
Such are the ways of the gnomes...

speaking of big and small gnomes.... I asked the crew to line up for a pix so I could see who needs cleaning up, fixing up, or shrinking down before I start putting them on pages...

... about half the crew showed up

I did some font fixing so pages will look the same on IE as they do on FF...
I resized some elements to fix the squishability of pages...
I changed a couple colors...
... but I still can't get little Willy to grow up to full size on FF... still working on that in between other stuff...

Are the fonts clear and readable for everyone?
Do the pages resize themselves to fit the screen?
Is it Friday yet?

First I am using IE
1) yes the fonts are clear readable for me...--still a bit big for my 17 inch screen but nothing I can't work with. It rreally is no big deal for me to go from side to side when I am using those pages thumbup

2) if they are suppose to resize to fit my screen nope that is not happening--BUT for all I know it may well be me that is the problem, not your site. why
and like I say, it is no problem for me to go from side to read what I ned to read.

3) nope, I am afraid it is still Tuesday--at least it is in Illinois. lol

I re-tagged the pages to be 1160px wide or if your res setting is higher, it will stretch to fit the screen. If your res is set lower (800x600?) you may have to scroll a bit. If you reset your res higher (1260x?) the fonts will look more proportionate.... I think.... and other sites may look better too... I think.... even if your monitor is 17"... I think....
idea
I think I will ask Moguai to check what I said.... I hate sticking my foot in my mouth!

Honestly, in today's market, it doesn't make sense to cater to users with 800x600 screens; in all honesty a baseline minimum should be 1024-1280 width...

well since I am computer illiterate I will try to get my SIL over here ASAP to check my screen width--
I assume you are referring to a setting on the computer??
But I must say I did not always have to scroll side to side, and no I do not rememebr when it began that I had to scroll.

but I thank you both so very much---I am sure you both have larger fish to fry right now, so not to be concerned about me--I was just trying to answer Bill's questions as I saw things on my computer.

BTW:
I thought a 17 inch screen was a good thing?????

It is sized for my screen. But I don't know what you're talking about as far as the rose symbols being aids for navigating the site.

Also, I need to get you a gnome dressed in red, white and blue.

Is willy still supposed to be "growing"? When I click on that link he fades in. I didn't see any mention of that so I just wanted to check. I do have to scroll side to side but I'm on a netbook with a 10.2" screen so I'm sure it's me and not you. The fonts are clear and readable here.

teach I really preferred Willy 'running up' to greet visitors, but for right now, I had to give up and move forward, so I substituted the 'fade in' Willy. I will come back to Willy later...

The breadcrumbs are barely visible now that I raised the sky by a bit. Right now there are only three colons put there to save work later on when I have a data set in place. They won't work until I do a few more things (scripting etc.)

My plan is to set a script that will change the gnome to another one each time a different directory page loads. I have 15 gnomes ready but I havent done the script yet... soon...

Thank you all for the continuing input! It has been a BIG help so far!

Mouse over or click the Plant Profiles button
I'll be using that script on lots of pages. The "profile menu" is pretty extreme on this one! lol

OK that page worked fine. I got a list of plants from African violets to peace lily. Is peace lily the last plant listed? Because if there are more plants beyond, I found no way to access them.

I don't know where to ask this. My screen is opposite from what it usually is. I don't know how I did it. The calendar and shout box is now on the left (facing the screen) and I don't know how to get it back on the right.
