For those of you wanting read past threads on Brugmansia's some of us members documented our learning process, Hopefully this will help others wanting to learn grin
Last fall 2008 thread

Last Spring2008

//www.agardenersforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/199280#Post199280

I began growing Brugmansia's 3 years ago thanks to our member Njoynit that sent me cuttings to start me out. I've been keeping track of them for two full seasons now, and this is my 3rd season. I've since sent cuttings out to other members. I'd like to see know how everyone's brugs are doing this spring,, what are your plans, How you over wintered , are they in pots are did you leave in the ground etc,.
Mine are coming back up now after covering the base(under) the cut off stocks with leaves,( I cut down to about 6 inches above ground) and then I filled large plastic buckets with leaves and covered the cut brugs. with the bucket turned up side down over the cut stocks so the leaves would insulate and keep the roots from freezing in the winter ,, All Brugs die once the roots freeze.
I removed the buckets and leaves the end of February,, and so far this is how much they have grown.
Unnamed Pink

Cotton candy and adora,, I've really got to separate these two. They are planted about 2 feet from each other , but Should be further apart.
Another Learning experience, Don't plant close together,, notme

Charles Grimaldi,, another lesson learned Less Sun Less Growth less blooms .He Needs More sun I've got to get him Moved.

very healthy plants but I can't help noticing your cute little elephant planter. He steals the show in that first picture.

looking good, diane!!

of the pieces you sent me, only a couple started roots and none of them took off too well at all. the one really tiny piece of the white flowered one that started growing new leaves before it even had roots was the one i thought would make it.

sadly it didn't - i had problems with the radiator in my plant room and i couldn't get it resolved and then i lost the heater all together on christmas day, so, the combination of lack of proper warmth for over a month and more than a full day with no heat at all did it in.

I, too, was lucky to get some brug cuttings from Diane a year ago in the spring. The only one that bloomed for me last year was the Charles Grimaldi. And MAN were those flowers GORGEOUS!!! luv Thanks again, Diane!!!

I had to overwinter the plants indoors, and Charles just LOVED it by the basement sliding doors. The leaves got HUGE, and a couple of Y's grew too - those are necessary for the plant to bloom. But then... a few weeks before the last frost date here, Charles got spider mites all over terribly and lost ALL of his leaves! boohoo

Thankfully, I was soon able to get him outside, hosed him off very well with a strong stream of water, and then planted him back in the ground in the pond garden. He soon started growing all of his leaves back! YEA! clap

But guess what I saw today?!?!? I am sooooooooooooo excited!!! bop
[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

See the "Y" in this picture!
[Linked Image]

There are LOTs of buds - I am thrilled! It's a full 2 months earlier that I am seeing the buds than it was last year! I first saw them in August! I hope this means that I will get lots of "waves" of blooms all summer - the flowers are just so HUGE and BEAUTIFUL and FRAGRANT! luv

Mine have struggled through the winter, and they've been hardened off, and planted in the ground now. I've noticed something weird happening to them. Could this be blight?!!!

Dodge - are they really supposed to bloom in October? My Adora had a bud on it for the longest time last fall but didn't have time to bloom before a heavy frost got to it.

So here we are, just 4 days later, and this is what I saw this afternoon in between rain showers. I was so excited that they were about to open any day now!
[Linked Image]

And THIS is what I saw this evening after dinner,
which was also after a VERY HEAVY rain and thunderstorm.
[Linked Image]

WOWZERS!!! bop clap
These flowers continue to absolutely AMAZE me!!! And they smell heavenly too! luv
[Linked Image]

And yet another one, with the camera flash
[Linked Image]

[size:14pt]Thanks so much again, Diane!!! kissie

[/size]

OHHHHHHHHHH - I saw a small bud on one of my Adora's this afternoon too!
It's only about an inch long, but hopefully I will get to see it bloom this time! thumbup

those are just beautiful. I've been watering every day hoping for blooms this year. Last year I had lots of buds but we had a frost before most of them bloomed and I didn't get it covered up.

I am so thrilled to say that Charles is still blooming wonderfully, despite some leaf holes from Japanese Beetles. The flowers are so heavenly scented - I can smell them across the pond when I sit on the arbor bench late afternoon feeding the fish in the pond!

Lookie what I have on one of the Adora cuttings! bop
It looks like I am actually going to see a flower on it this year - last year was such a tease with it about to open and then we had a killing frost! This is the only bud on it so far, so I hope I get to see the colors!

beautiful, beautiful flowers!! i can *almost* smell them!!

diane, so sorry to hear about the mites - it's so darn hot and dry there, don't know what to tell you to do to get rid of them. i'm sure they'll bounce back, though, and soon...getting into the 'season' so it'll be rainy and that'll get rid of the mites!!

i would love to try some cuttings again in the fall - if you don't mind sending some again! and i have something i can send you in return...not telling though nono - it'll have to be a surprise bop

Thanks Dodge and Joclyn!

ECSTATIC is the word of the day today! bop

My very first Adora bloom is opening! This one is NOT going to get killed by frost this time, and I can see the wonderful light salmony color already! When I looked at it yesterday, it looked pale yellow, but today the true colors are coming out. I think it will be fully open this evening - CAN'T WAIT!!!

[Linked Image]

Bottom not quite fully open yet
[Linked Image]

There aren't any other buds on this one yet, but it has grown a Y, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for more blooms! grin thumbup
