I'm always so glad to see my hens and chicks start to plump up again outside after their long, cold winter nap. I've had these batches for probably 4 years or so now... They are still red from the winter cold, but will soon green up, as they are doing in the frog!
I have bought the very large ones that Home Depot sometimes gets in, but since the large mother hen dies off after flowering, it's not really worth the money, as only a few babies tend to survive afterwards. I WOULD like to find a better variety that puts out larger chicks though...
Looking good Lynne! My neighbor was the one who gave me mine a few years ago, then it flowered and died! Hers never does that, I guess it just liked my garden better.
Funny you posted this though, yesterday she stopped me and said--didn't you say your hens and chicks died? I said yep---she dug me up another big clump of them!
If you mean the lighter green plants at the bottom of the picture, they are sedums - can't remember the name right now, but they get yellow flowers at the tips of the long growths.
Thought I'd share another Hens and Chicks plant I have today. It's hanging on a sheperd's hook in the front yard. I'm actually hoping it does NOT bloom, as I really like the way it looks and don't want any of the rosettes to die!
I have a few of the red ones too. My green one i put in the bird pot Lorena gave me in a swap has babies. I have to get pics later. Yours look great Lynne.
I took a picture today to show Carol my first bloom on my hens and chicks this year. This is the same cluster of plants that I posted last year up above. Not the best picture, but if you look in the upper right corner you can see the flower stalk starting to grow up and tall.
Thanks Lynne for showing me your hen & chicks--and I can see the one that is going to flower and then die---I hope that does not happen a lot of the time?/
\very nice picture BTW.

Well it does happen often if the plants are happy, so there really isn't much that can be done about losing the hens, but hopefully it is also happy enough to put out many chicks too!
Love your hens and chicks. I spent yesterday getting ajuga and ground flox away from some of mine. They were crowding each other. Then I found some chicks in the flox too. LOL. I have a cobweb tiny one that is in blossom now. It has a pink blossom. It is soooo cute. I will get picture when it stops raining.
I am strong when I am on your shoulders, you raised me up to be more than I can be.
I bought this plant about a month ago at Home Depot and it's already sending up a large flower stalk. It's out by the pond so it gets lots of sun and reflected light. I already had lots of hens and chicks plants, but can't seem to resist buying "just one more" each time I see them for sale!
Out by the water? h/c? Mine are by the chimney goign ape isn sady soil.

I put these 2 plants in small pots for now - depending on how large they get, I will either pot them up to larger pots, or put them in the waterfall hills.
Thank you so much--and yes I had heard that after the bloom the "hen" dies. well if mine did it sure left plenty behind, because i didnt notice any plant was missing.
