Does anyone out there use worms for composting? If so, what's the best kind of system? What kind of worms do you use? I've read that the regular earthworms that are in my soil are not the right kind? How long does it take to get usable compost? I'm anxious to start but lack the funds to make too many mistakes. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Oh we had a wonderful thread all about worms. I don't know where it went or how to post a link here. I am no expert. I started my "farm" with 10 worms about 5 years ago. I didn't know what I was doing and they thrived anyway. They do thrive on neglect. I have thousands now.
The worms needed are redworms. Please someone jump in and tell Donna all of the correct things to do. All I did was to take my container and fill it with damp shredded paper and dump the worms in. I added all of my kitchen scraps and coffee grounds on too and left them alone for months. They keep dampened with my sprinkler system. Now I turn them over about once a month or two. You can take out castings as you go alond after about the first six months.
And welcome to the forum, Donna!

Thank you so much for all this help, Weezie and Tina! I read the "Let's talk about worms" and found it to be very informative.
I think I'll try the box w/the wire on the bottum, that sounds like the least maintenance. Do you think I could get some worms from you, Tina? I'd be happy to send payment first. It sounds like your worms are just what I'm looking for.

Enjoy your day!
