this picture is blurry because I took it through the screen on my porch. I didn't want to disturb her. I read online tonight that bloodmeal may help keep cats away from areas so I'm getting some tomorrow. Pray that it will work.

I think you have a Great-Tailed Grackle. There are THREE types of Grackles in the U.S., the Common, the Great-Tailed, and the Boat-Tailed Grackles. Both the Common and Great-Tailed Grackle are year-round residents of the Grandprairie, Tx area. The incredibly long tail on this bird along with the iridescence says Great-Tailed Grackle to me.

Robin on the roof peak

My pal Mr. Red Finch the other day He landed on the patio chair arm next to the chair I was sitting in,, Now I sit outside with food in my hand coaxing him to eat from my hand,, I believe he is getting more secure with me, He looks for a while then goes to the feeder but still watches me. Is there a chance he will eventually eat from my hand??

IMMATURE (Juvenile) Robin on Roof. See the speckled breast? Your male House Finch may eat from your hand eventually but will definitely lose much of his fear of you. You have a better chance of having a Chickadee or even a Mockingbird eating from your hand. Both of them are known to eat from your hand. as to the sex of the Mocker, WHo KNOWS? Both sexes are identical. However, male Mockers are the ones who sing and tend to be a little more massive and buff.

Mockingbird eat from my hand?? They seem so skiddish and fly away anytime I get within 10 feet of them boohoo I will definitely keep that in mind,, BUT what do they eat why I never see them at feeders,, must be insects and berries?? why

I have a lot of males around here then cuz all the ones I see are singing,, lol lol oh yeah And lately I've seen two in particular that sing ~ then jump up flapping their wings and land and sing again and do that several times over,, I looked it up and what I found was it was a defense thing in theory , but there isn't ever anything near them to threaten them,, the two I see are on roof tops when they do that,, and once in the top of a tree, I thought maybe it was a mating ritual type thing what's your theory on that Thorny?? teach why

Mockingbirds are omnivorous but really like Suet, especially peanut flavored. They also LOVE apple slices and like those smeared with peanut butter, too. I also understand they like grapes and grape jelly. You earn a Mocker's trust over time. They see you every day and NOTICE that YOU are the one that brings the food treats, and they soon wait for you each day to bring out the treats and will fly down and land a few feet away, like a hungry cat or dog, as you put out the food. Then as they eat you whistle sing and talk to them, and make no threatening moves, and before you know it, they greet you every time you come out of the house whether you have food or not!

That singing leap and somersault from a HIGH EXPOSED perch is a combination mating display territory display that Mockers do every spring and early Summer. it is HILARIOUS and fascinating to watch.

Here is Mr. Mocky after my Peanut suet.

HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS, KING MOCKY

Mr. Mocky is quite helpful around the yard, too. He entertains with singing, keeps the Starlings away by attacking them, and helps with other yard jobs. Her is a Picture I took of Mr. Mocky taking a break from raking the leaves.

Cool Thanks SO Much for that Info' grin ,, The picture you showed of your Mocky's territorial display is exactly what I see!
No wonder the apples pieces I throw in the yard disappear,, I cut up apples for salads when I have left over pieces I always throw them in the yard thinking some birds will eat them! grin Next time I'll put peanut butter on some slices grin maybe I should set up a particular place just for them and the same time every evening?( evening is the only time I have to observe besides weekends boohoo * Looking forward to when I can retire*
Great Information Thorney Thanks again thumbup

If you'll notice, my apple slices are on an old stainless steel table that is my platform feeder. Mockers prefer platform feeders. Mr. Mocky was on his telephone perch singing yesterday. I whistled the first four of Beethoven's Fifth at him, and he repeated the first three notes back to me as a friendly greeting. I also have his mate, kids, and even grandkids now, that visit on a daily basis. They are ALL VERY friendly.
