So I put the lemon and orange trees in LARGE pots and put them outside.. Now some ants have come along and decided that the lged pots would make great places to put their hills! Grr madd! I put some cornmeal (thanks to you guys luv)so I am hoping that will work. The ants are going into the soil very close to the little trunk.. I am so worried about my little tree rolz! Any suggestions? Anything else I can do? Thanks guys!

Take some fly ribbon and wrap it around the trunk..
It should catch some.

Dodge- I like this idea!

We are forever fighting with ants in the garden area.. It seems as soon as we get rid of some a new group shows up..

Try putting small dishes of bleach in the area , see what happens. Dont spill it on the earth, just put in dishes or small containers..

Ants are attracted to trees that hosts honeydew producing insects such as aphids, soft scales, mealybugs or white flies.

Do you see any of the insects mentioned above in your lemon and orange trees? If so, you need to treat it/them first to get rid of the ants. You can use protein based granules as ants bait.

I went out there and got a good look and I didn't see any aphids.. It almost looks like the ants are eating the flowers! I looked at the back of the leaves and noticed that they have black spots could that be it? I should also say that these little trees were given to me and were left out on a porch and kind of forgotten for a little over a year.. Thanks for all the great info on how to care for them! You guys are the best!

Could they be eating the flowers? That is so gross, they can't taste good, LOL!

I have the same problem on my orange tree.Perhaps regular watering will force the ants to move on?

So your trees are OK? It doesn't kill them?

I made a new spray for the white fly on my Brugs today.

Took tiny bit of dish liquid, tabasco pepper sauce and warm water .. Shake till it disolves. Fill the bottle with water, and spray the plant. My brug looked pretty happy after that.

It might work on the ants.

Oh it was supposed to have the red pepper and I couldnt find it, so I used the Tabasco......
Won't hurt the plant.

Getting Rid of Ants

There are several suggestions at the above link in getting rid of ants.

Please note: the Diatomaceous earth mentioned in the article is not the same as the one used for swimming pools.
