I'm trying to decide where to place my herbs this year. My entire garden was in large plastic bins on the south side of my house last year. I grew basil along with the tomatoes and it did VERY well. This year we are tilling up a real garden in our backyard, but my husband does not want any herbs taking up any space where we could plant more vegetables. My only other spots are a flowerbed in the front yard that has lots of space, the bins from last year, or my kitchen windowsill. Either which way, I want to plant some in the window. Should I just sow them in the pots in early spring? Could I start this winter?

The seeds I have on-hand:

Parsley
Basil
Thyme
Rosemary
Dill

herbs can be started indoors at any time. Having said that I have no luck with rosemary seeds. Dill gets very large so it may not do to well in your window sill and it doesn't really like to be transplanted. So you might want to wait and plant it outside. Also Dill is very aggressive so if you can still use your containers that would be my suggestion.

Basil is an annual but if you pinch off the flowers when they start forming you can keep the plant for many years.
