growing Avocado
seeds Into Trees].
Grafted avocado plants bear in 2 to 3 years.
seedlings bear fruits of variable quality in 8 to 12 years. Some varieties needs female plant for pollination.
Avocados are self-fruitful. Not familiar with avocado varieties suitable for Florida, but here is a short list: Booth 7, Brogdin, Choquette, Gainsville, Hall, Lula,Mexicola, Monroe, Pollock, Simmonds, Tonnage, Waldin.
Plant avocados in
spring, in deep, well drained soil. The trees will not tolerate standing water. Needs full sun, soil pH range of 5.5 to 6.5. In early
spring to late summer apply small amount of complete fertilizer according to label instructions.
To increase avocado yield in California, the right varieties are combined. Avocado
flowers are classed as type A or type B. Type A
flowers are receptive to pollen in the morning, but don't release their pollen until the afternoon of the following day. With type B, the
flowers are receptive in the afternoon but pollen is not released until the following morning.
