I was digging up my potatoes and the red skinned potatoes where fine. I started digging up the brown skinned (Burbank's or something like that) and there were gnawing marks on many of them. It didn't look like it was from an insect, it looked like it was from a rodent. I was bewildered as I have grown potatoes for many years and had never seen that before. Also, why just the brown skinned and not the reds? Also, although this is not a pest problem, most of my brown skinned potatoes were fused together-sometimes as many as six or eight potatoes-made for lots of interesting shapes grin

"I have NO idea WHAT could be eating your potatoes ', Thorn says, as he quickly hides his sour cream and chives and bottle of bacon bits.

Info from UC Davis IPM
potato
Voles (Meadow Mice)

http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/r607600111.html

Quote
DAMAGE

Voles move into potato fields when infested grain or alfalfa fields are harvested, usually in August or September, burrowing into hills for shelter and to feed on tubers. Their feeding damages tubers directly and their burrows may expose tubers to sunlight or freezing temperatures, causing additional losses. Damaged tubers have gnaw marks about 0.12 inch (3mm) wide and 0.36 inch (9 mm) long at various angles. Damage may also be caused by predators that dig into potato hills in search of voles. If vole populations are high at harvest, they may be carried into storage, where they will continue to feed on tubers and also contaminate the crop.

They make a little trap that you set up in the yard. When they pass under it...whammy. shock I saw them at Menards last week.
