I need to plant some fragrant things around my hammock (under an apple tree--lots of shade). They don't have to have flowers, but flowers would be good, too. I was thinking herbs like rosemary or mint? I saw Henry's post about hostas and will check out the ideas he was given, but I wanted to ask for more! Thanks. (I am in zone 8b and have clay soil).

Gardenias are my favorites for scent in a pretty shady location. Creeping rosemary is pretty good too. But thrives in a little more sun. Sweet violets do well here in our winters.
Do you have a Sunset western gardening book? I'm sure one will be available in your library. It breaks our zones down even further and then also gives you options for shade, scents and things. It is my staple book. You might be able to find one in a used bookstore or a thrift store as well.

Thanks, Tina! I don't know why I didn't think of gardenias—I love them! And duh, I do have the Sunset Western Garden book. Thanks for the reminder to go there...(We're between zones 18-19).

I did plant gardenias, and they seem very happy so far. Thanks again. :)
