I took some photos at the field I am renting. They aren't real clear and please don't notice all the weeds! Here are my melons, squash, bean towers and where the greens and peas were, also the straw near where the broccoli was.
great pictures tamara, but can you resize them so other's can see? we typically limit the size to 640x480 and 3 per post, but you can put more in a reply to the original post.
Thanks for resizing. I was being lazy and stupid. OOps the first and second photos are mislabeled. The first shows peppers and sweet potatoes mostly and the second is zucchini, beans, melons and where the greens were/are. I didn't grow any horseradish and I'm not sure what looks like it so I can't say. I did grow Jerusalem artichokes, 1 eggplant and tons of milkweed is everywhere. I did all the work myself 100% and there were days where it almost killed me. I haven't even gotten my husband to walk in there and help me pound in a stake that is too tall for me. I think I could weed 40 hours every week if I wanted to. I don't think anything was materially bothered by the weeds though. I am looking into cover crops etc for fall and especially what to keep weeds down in sweet corn.
Wow, thanks for resizing...now I can see them all.
A very nice sized garden with great variety. So do the owners of the land supply you with the water? It looks like soaker hoses you have.
Don't worry about the weeds. Having a garden that size is a full time job when it comes to weeding. I remember putting in a very large garden years ago and I was babysitting a friends baby. That poor little girl spent more time being tied in a sling in front of me while I weeded. The friend said I spoiled the baby by 'slinging' her, the baby loved it though .
~~Tam~ You can bury all your troubles by digging in the dirt.
Very nice garden. I use lots of mulch in mine around everything and it really cuts the weeds down. Know it is hard to find in some places. Here I get all I want free. But as an old farmer used to tell me. He had never saw a 2 year old weed yet. And every year should get better. It has for me. JD
The red things are these tomato automator trays my mom gave me. I didn't like them much at first but when I saw bugs get stuck in them I started to love them. They prevent bugs, weeds and if you water with a hose or can there are special holes for that. I water them with soaker hoses. Anyway I am thinking of buying more next year. There are different models here and there. The bigger the better in my opinion. Oh one of my tomatoes without the tray got toppled by a cutworm. I rent from a slight acquaintance whose siblings all still own a bit of land left from their dad's farm. They are middle aged and just use the shed and stuff. The brother in law uses the two small fields to grow pumpkins and I share a little of it with him and we share the irrigation pump too.
The onions are from Territorial seed. They are from plants. I highly recommend their plants over sets!!! I won a blue ribbon the last three years at the fair from those awesome onions (also get the leeks and garlic from them).
Thanks so much. I can report that I have made $120.50 this year in selling this and that I grew. A big produce stand actually opened up last weekend on the opposite drive in to the property I grow on (I am on the highway side and he is on the busy county road side). I went and talked to him and it was one of these 'grocery store' produce stands that are so common around here. The southern accent and peaches and giant melons really tipped me off! Anyway either I set up signs that say my stuff is actually grown on the premises or I ask him to sell my organic, homegrown stuff for part of the profit. (I don't put out my signs and sell very often or very regularly due to work etc.) My corn and tomatoes are coming in strong and I want to make some more money. It is in my blood to sell veggies. I purchased the roll off liner for my truck that I mentioned before but haven't installed it. It will be so awesome to start dumping compost and manure with zero work!
