Anyone ever make their own insecticidal soap? I've found 1 to 1-1/2 tsp to 1 quart water.

I am desperate to try to keep the leaf hoppers away from my surviving coneflowers for the rest of the summer and hopefully stay ahead of them next summer. I must have dug up 15 to 20 well-established plants this summer because of yellow aster disease!

I just use a small spoonful of ivory dish liquid and the rest water, in a big spray bottle.

It works pretty good.

Comments to ND farm girl and Tamara's recipes for insecticidal soap:

home made insecticidal soap spray for aphids, leafhoppers, mites, scales, thrips, and whiteflies.

caution: do not apply insecticidal soap spray on a hot, windy or humid day.

Does anyone know how often this can/should be done? I just want to keep the leafhoppers off my coneflowers. I've read that you have to do it in the morning or at night - when the hoppers are actually on the plant because you have to spray the bug to kill them. Could I do it once a week? Ya think?

I copied this from the internet someplace.

Insecticidal soap is generally used as a 1-2% solution (1-2 oz. per gallon). Mix soap concentrate in a clean 1 gallon sprayer. Plan to treat in the morning of a warm day when the plants will be able to dry before evening. Spray plants with a coarse spray of plain water from the garden hose. Next, thoroughly spray plants with soap solution covering all surfaces. Finally, wait 30 minutes then wash soap off with water. The last step will prevent soap solution from damaging tender leaf tissue.

a different site:>>>>>>>>>>>

I cannot find the site back but I thought, when researching how to get rid of spider mites I read I was to make a solution of 1 tsp soap per quart of water.---you spray the tops & bottoms of the leaves of the plant, you wait 24 hours and then you wash off the plant with plain water. and then I think it said once a week was adequate.

Note: Buy a liquid soap and not a detergent. Health food
stores have liquid soaps, such as Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Soaps.

This was another ratio I found:

Insecticidal Soap Spray
1 to 2 tablespoons liquid soap
1 quart water

..............confused now???? why

sorry I cannot help more---

i've done the 1-2 tbs dish soap in a quart of water. and i have added oil to it (1-2 tsp). shake well before each use on house plants. the stuff carol put in is fairly accurate.
