Hostas are tough, I'm in zone 3-4 and they get snow and frost, they've never faded away on me yet. Replant the hosta, if it was dug up recently it should still be dormant.

I bought one the year before. It didn't bloom last year. It's up again, but it has alot more leaves than before....think it'll bloom?Could all the fertilizer my brugmansia gets be causing the not blooming? I've done killed the divsions my mom gave me of hers.It does receive some sun,is shaded in morning time.
I will age ungracefully until I become an old woman in a small garden..doing whatever the Hell I want!
I've heard of people getting their sewer line replaced, only to discover that the sewer line ran under a hosta-bed AFTER it had been dug up. She said she couldn't even find several hostas, but they started to sprout up again a few weeks later. I've also heard that if they get nematodes that you can dig them up, shake off the soil, and then put them in your car and park it in the sun. Do that a few days and you'll kill the nematodes without doing too much injury to the hosta. Don't know if I'd go that far, but I thought I'd share.
Njoynit, I get blooms starting the second year usually. I buy the tubers and get maybe 3 or 4 leaves the first year and the next year they fill out quite beautifully.
I bought some yellow ones last year, they are beautiful. i'll certainly be picking up more this year.

I have lots off hosta's, never put them in full sun, they like mostly shade, I feed mine plant food at the first sign's off them pushing through the soil,as I do with all my plants, it gives them a good start. Love hosta's, leave mine in the ground all year round
I have all varities planted in shade and sun. Although we don't get very hot summers anyway. Don't know how they'd fair out in a warmer climate though.

I forget if the blue hostas are more blue in shade or sun (I thought it was shade, but I am really not sure). Mine have taken a beating, and come back (even switching from full sun to deep shade)
I've mistreated this poor hosta just about everyway you can and believe it or not. Inspite of being dug up and left for dead for several day it is sprouting. Of course it is behind the other hostas in that area but it's giving it all it's got. It should get a medal for surviving my lack of gardening skills and savy. WTG Hosta!
I bought a five hostas that were in 4" pots in early March. We had a cold snap and I had not planted them yet. Needless to say, I thought they were dead--the leaves had frozen, and the one hosta I had planted in the previous year was coming out of the ground and had not frozen. My hostas are looking wonderful now. Even the ones I thought were dead!
As you can see, the second one from the left is the established hosta. The others, I planted this year. It looks like I planted them too close together--but I can fix that. The boxwoods are sitting in the bed because we're planning on planting these soon. In the meantime, I've left them in an area of the yard that only gets sun until 11am.
mine are close to blooming.I can't find my tag,but remember I bought cause said could take some sun.I believe its the thicker leaves that can take sun.I've looked at the ones at local wally world...but can't decide. My moms does great, but she's TN in zone 6.she recieved hers from neighbor. They had a storm take out there only shade tree...so gave mom their shade plants.I think sis got some hosta divisions from that transfer too...hers are great too.her yards mostly shade..same zone as mom.I believe they were called patriot or something close to that were a dark green with white.I imagine my heat in summer roasted them in the shade.
I will age ungracefully until I become an old woman in a small garden..doing whatever the Hell I want!
i'm in zone 7a and they get west exposure where I have them. They require a lot of water to stay healthy but so far so good. Even the one that got dug up and left for dead for a week is recovering. There bed is entirely compost this year and they are loving it.
I'm glad to hear of story's of hostas taking a beating and still surviving. I just planted 6 hostas last fall and while they are all coming up I had to move 4 of them to a different spot yesterday. The roots didn't seem to established and they are still quite small so I was hoping that they would survive the transplant. They are in a better spot now anyway. When I planted them there was a great big huge fir tree and they were in mostly shade all day, then my neighbor had that tree cut down and all of a sudden they were getting a lot of sun. Now they are up against the house on the north side so I think they'll be happy there.
A local nursery has these HUGE hostas for about$20 each. They're neat ones, too. I have to keep myself out of that place! I am spending all my money on plants!
I'm addicted too. There are lots of us here. I definitely have to stay out of garden centers and online nurseries and not look at catalogs. The list goes on. Almost anything is libel to start a buying frenzy.
Hi meet Njoynit...a CERTIFIED plantaholiac.I have a certificate somewhere saying that too.
Here's an earlier-in-season shot of hosta. Its going to bloom soon.has the bud stalk, which bears liliac flowers.I now understand'crowns'I looked at underneath leaves when weeding today.the one pictured has 2 crowns the other is still small, but were bought at same time.
???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? SO if you have one developeing a crown....do you divide in fall or spring? I have a taped Garden diary show(HGTV folks 7am or is it 7:30?)a man in A suberb of atlanta GA has his yard FILLED with them some in pots some not.I liked the red stemed ones& we're some smaller leafed ones they stayed compact.
These hostas are over 14 years old. They were planted in full all day sun when we moved in then, by the previous owners, and looking very sickly. I moved them to morning sun only, and they have been thriving ever since. I've divided them numerous times to the point where my dad was able to line his entire backyard with them. They are in my front yard in front of the house.
Another spot by the front steps:
Rounding the front corner on the left side of the house:
I put my hostas in with my chinese lanterns. Can I spell another gardening booboo? The chinese lanterns are taking over which was just what I wanted them to do. But, I didn't expect them to do it this fast. So now I've got to figure out if it is possible to move the hostas while they are growing? Anyone have any tips for me? I really need a landscaper babysitter. I'm forever marching to my own drummer and it just doesn't work when it comes to gardening lol.
Thanks Dodge, I got right out there and moved the two that were most threated by the chinese lanterns. The third is the one that got left above grown upside down for a week. It's much smaller than the other two so I thought I should give it more recovery time. Also I have to figure out where in the world I'm going to put it. My shade garden, as strange as it may seem is full. I'll have to cut another two feet of lawn out inorder to fit in another hosta. I guess I have my work cut out for me because it is bermuda grass and you want to talk about roots.
that's a good thought njoynit. The landlord owes me a 17 inch pot maybe I'll remind him and put it in that. Not hanging put next to the building it would look good. Hum, I'll have to consider that. Thanks for the idea!
I put some of mine in containers , even tho I have lots of room........I like the effect....... Now I have lots of lily bulbs not hardy, so I will put them in a large pot and just pop it in the basement in the fall. Oh I hate to dig them up.
I'll have to dig under my compost pile and see if I can come up with more finished compost if I pot it. It really needs all the help it can get. I don't want it to begin shrinking on me.
hosta seeds form on the plant after the flowers die off, you cant miss the pod. i had a bunch od seedsgrowing last year but put em out to early and they all died off from a frost. poor little things. you can start them in a small pot and put the pot in a bagie. i just used the damp paper towl in a bagie , when the seeds sprouted i put them in a pot/bagie. lol i just wanted to see if they would sprout and they did.
I'm hopeing the rain will make the buds grow faster.
I'll try the seeds!I got some in trade but the cup still looks empty.I'll have to watch my pod.so are many of the flowers fragrant?anyone grow any fragrant ones?white flowered ones?
I will age ungracefully until I become an old woman in a small garden..doing whatever the Hell I want!
This is my sisters yard.If I'm able to get it posted.I was even excited to see her growing one of my brugmanisas (its by the board thing. Those are some of the hostas mom got gave to her and divided.those are the light colored leaves ones.she says it gets a flower, but she's more in it for the foliage.
Due to my stubborness (zone 9), I have a bed of several whimpy hostas. I've moved them, divided them, hacked their unsuspecting roots and amazingly, they rise every year, and multiply. Aside from feeding a 'nothing special' plant food, any secret hosta chant for coaxing them to a fuller glory? Or do I just need sactified ground like TKHooper's church? <insert smiley face guy here>
We had a problem with slugs eating holes in my hostas so I sprayed the dickens out of them with bug spray. Wasn't until I saturated them that I realized it was weed spray. I tried washing them but it did no good. The hostas died..........I thought. Next spring, up they pop like nothing happened. They are like Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Terminator.

hmmmm so if I spray weed killer where they use to grow....they'll return. Mom don't know I killed them.least the 2 I bought lived.sis couldn't believe they died on me,hopefully she ain't told me.

Here are the same hostas, but this week. This picture was taken on the 2nd.
My boyfriend's dad is selling his beautifully landscaped house. He told me that we can have any of the plants we want, just as long as we transplant them ourselves! I'm so excited! He's got a lot of really, relly big hostas!
Here's a fabulous hosta garden from our recent local garden tour. Gives you lots of ideas on ones he had in the shade (traditional) and a few that were getting more light.
My albo marginatas can take some sun (white-edged green) but my Krossal Regal (blue) was not happy in the sunny spot I had it. Here's a great hosta site - http://www.hostalibrary.org/

My GD dog was digging holes in my hosta bed! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I'm going to put electric fencing around it to teach him a lesson! Not practical as it is at the back of the yard. Any cheap suggestions? Does chicken wire work?
K I have a couple of questions here. One how long does it usually take for hostas to bloom? I planted a bunch of different types I bought at walmart, the kinds in the bags, and they are not blooming yet. Two I found this morning that I had a few types still in the bags, from last year(2006) do you think that they will grow or should I just throw them out? Thanks in advance for any insight and suggestions.
My Hostas just started about 2 weeks ago to bloom......And they pop up first thing in the spring.....So that is a couple months..... It depends how large the plants are also....If they are mature enough to plant.
What did the ones in the bag look like dry????//Put them in a bucket of water for a while and see if they get any life to them..?????? Dont really know......Climate makes a difference too.
Sounds great.. All i know is they ship lots of plants here to sell........ Walmart mostly....... No such thing as planting them in a green hose anymore........Too costly for the fuel ....... years ago they did.
I haven't posted in here in a really long time. Some of my hostas died. It was mostly my fault. I put them next to the house where they were sheltered from rain and kept forgetting to go back there and water them. The other two that I have are doing well though. They are still very small, babies, but they bloomed! I didn't think they would being so yound and small but they both have purple flowers! I'll get a pick if it ever stops raining.
Long time no see........ The Hosta like it in part shade ......Sometime they fool you and come back.. Is some of them survived ......They will multiply rapidly.. Consider yourself luck with rain......Out here it is so dry , like powder and we are dying for a drop.
That is a very cute collection of hosta.......Actually I dont like mine to bloom. I prefer it just with the foilage.......Yours do look nice. Mine get tall and ugly.....
Know what else? They all have the same color of bloom and same flower..Which strikes me odd.......Anyone else notice that?
I'm not sure what you mean, dodge. Do you mean my hostas have the same color of bloom and same flower? Or do you mean all hostas that have been posted have the same color of bloom and same flower?
Mine are so sparce. What do you think the chances are of uprooting them, amending the soil (adding compost and lovely water retentive crystals), then replanting them and watering the heck out of them?
Mine flowers are mostly white with a tinge of purple at the edges, hardly noticable. And the stems are at least 2 1/2 feet tall. And lightly scented.
I haven't added fertilizer to my plants this summer except for once or twice. I have been making sure they have plenty of water..that's about it. I did put some cedar mulch down though. That may help out.
I meant there are all sorts of Hostas ..........But they still have the same blossom.
ALl have the purple blossom like that ......No matter what type of leaves they have.. At least all I have seen ..b
Dodge, some of my hostas have different flowes than the others. I have some that have purple spike type flowers and some that have white flowers that grow on thicker spikes that look like white, tiny roses.
It is quite alright ......I am goofing off most of the time here.. Not serious..
Had a ball today, rode motorcycle for almost 90 miles then went to the chicken place and bought a bucket of chicken for supper.. Didnt have to cook today.
Don't over do the fertilizer bit.......Water is good when needed.
Mulch I don't use......$$$$$$$$$$$$ to walk on .....Do you have to do it every year?
My dirt is composed of old cattle dung.
I only did some mulch this year because I live in SW Idaho, which is very dry. If I water the plants when there is no mulch, the ground dries out so quickly that it is rare during a mild summer that I can get away with not watering every single day. I think I may have to re-do it next year because I didn't put a enough down to begin with. It wasn't too much money--I paid about $3 a bag of 2 cu ft. But it's really helped with getting the H2O to soak in.
This is the first year where I've put mulch down and I will be around for the next year. LOL. We bought our house about 1.5 years ago--so I will see how it looks in about seven months, won't we? (I do need to buy enough to cover all my beds though. I have a few beds that don't have any mulch, and they get dry really fast.
NIce to have a new home........Now I arent a mulcher.......But I do have stone in some of the difficult places........We have many here...
I didnt know of the dryness there......I have some of the white marble on one side of the house where soil is all clay .. My Dalhias love it ....... Upper side in one bad area I put red boney............However these do last quite a while.....
can hostas take full sun? ever since we took down a tree at the front of the house, they don't seem to be doing "as well". of course, we did this right before 9 days of straight 100 degree weather, so i don't know if it is the sun or the heat?
