at one time in my life i was also told i would not be discharged from a hospital until i could take and keep down solid food, and the smell of it alone made me nausious. mom put vicks under my nose, and after i got used to smelling that, there wasn't a food smell that got by it to make me sick....voila, out in 2 days.

I can just see you now, you'll end up walking in that hospital with bags of different food for her to try! I know you'll get her to eat.

If she is going to eat anything, salmon would probably be it.

My 13 year old son has lived on ensure for about seven years. A little juice a couple times a week. A banana about once a month. Trix wildberry blue or triple cherry yogurt every day. About every other month, he has a few bites of a MacD's cheeseburger. He is very healthy.
Stock up on the ensure for when Cindy gets home. Walmart has ensure wannabe for a consistantly lower price. That is what I get

The ensure has definitely given her vitamins and nutrients that she has needed. I think a big part of their concern is the surgery she had. I would imagine they want to be sure she doesn't have any problem getting solid food through her system.

I understand that, Rachel. They need to test that everything works. But after the test, if she still isn't hungry for food, the ensure will keep her going for a long time. It has just about everything in it that a body needs. A few of Ted's school mates are tube fed and that is what they feed. They thrive on it.

I'm sure it would appease the dr if she atleast ate something and got it through her system. Her appetite will come back. I got to the point there in the hospital with her the smell of the cafeteria and that food made my sick. I had to call Bill and ask him to bring me and Brennan some food because I couldn't walk in the cafeteria without gagging. Once she leaves there she will get her appetite back. Bill cooks good yummy stuff for her.

aren't they working towards getting her back to eating regular food??? they should have already started with soft foods - cream of wheat, yogurt, creamed chipped beef, etc.

it's going to take a bit of transition for cindy to want to eat solids again AND it's going to take her body time to re-adjust after being on the ensure as well as feeding tube (i'm assuming she had that).

although hospital food is usually so 'not good' in this case that's a good thing! besides the issues of not eating solids, cindy is also dealing with her taste buds and sense of smell being back to full working order (smoking makes those two senses go way way down). so, cindy being nauseous and not wanting to eat makes perfect sense!!!

she and her body are just overwhelmed with the sensations (even with the yucky hospital fare)!! the vicks rub is a perfect idea!! even a halls mentholyptus lozenge would help - and that would help sooth her throat (damage from the respirator is also an issue barring wanting to eat solid food).

i'm glad you're feeling better cindy!! you do need to get some food into ya, though!! so, you're going to have to force it through even if you don't feel hungry...once the regular stuff hits your stomach, it'll kick your appetite back into normal gear!

Bill the thought off her having to use the bathroom might be scaring her,and she knows when she does start to eat solids that is going to happen. I'am sorry If this sounds personal, but It could be a possiblity.

I will continue to pray that she will start to eat solids by tomorrow.

Love and prayers. thumbup prayers

Does Cindy like Jello or pudding? They would be easy for her stomach to digest after being "inactive" for soo long. Ensure doesn't make the belly really do much and IV's don't do anything other than hydrate....no making the belly work there either.

Got my Levi 501's on... black Van Hueson shirt (2 unbuttons), my mountain boots, bright green John Deere spenders, bomber jacket, windblown hair and my beard is totally frizzed....
How could she possibly refuse to do ANYTHING I asked?
All I want is for her to take a few bites of some really yummy stuff I'm bringing her. (see previous post re: "she WILL eat today")

I would say after that stinky chicken noodle soup they brought her the other day she'll never be able to eat it again. It was nasty stomach turning stinky! Shew!!

I think Bill is taking her a yummy baked potato. She loves those. I've talked to her and so has Bill. She knows that she HAS to eat to come home. She'll force herself at this point. I've assured her that once she gets a little bit of real food in her stomach, it will start wanting more and it will get easier.

When you are right, Bill you are right. thumbup

if all else fails, do try jello and or pudding.--they should slide down her throat and be easy to digest as well. which I gather is the main issue right now???

when I worked in the hospital and people wouldn't eat much of anything they would always eat a baked potato. One problem is that it takes more energy than we realize to chew and swallow. Something with a little consistency like a baked potato does the trick.

Bill, I've heard that there is one sure way to give a person the munchies but it does involve smoking. Mind you now, I've only heard... angel
