Hello I got some columbine seeds from another gardener and I forgot how to plant them? Can I still sprinkle some seeds in peat pots indoors until ready to be transplanted outdoors?I have them now in the refrigerator. Hope someone can help me out here?

plant in the fall. In the spring the birds would just eat them.

I've planted mine at this time, but I give them a gentle pat on top of the soil, so they adhere to the soil, blend in a bit and get good contact with the soil/dirt..
But I throw them out now.. While it's still cold/cool... and moist..

Yep, but I would still get some out there now/ spring time. It doesn't take much to grow those Columbines. Mine reseed just about most places in my yard.. I only take a scratcher tool, and give a quick scratch to plant mine... I think about how Mother Nature does it, she just dries the seed pod out and when the wind blows or an animal hits the dead stalk, or it finally falls over, where the seeds lay is where the plant starts..

I wish my columbine started that easily but they don't. Maybe because we normally don't have a very long cold snap. Or because the soil I'm working with is so very bad.

No, actually for soil, at least for me here, I do not ammend to soil where they land.. Infact, I did put some Columbine seeds into a bucket of very old, decomposing saw dust and tree pieces', and although they came up good, all I got was foliage.. NO flowers, too much gooddddddd soil...*all nitrogen* Probably the cold for you is maybe the problem... Columbines like it cold/cool.. Mine will stay green under the snow, if like in the fall, it was cold, and then major snow dumps on it, and then it thaws, it'll still be green under it.. and are one of my very first to leaf out in the spring time..

Mine sprouted last year so is this considered the second year or still the first year. I bet this is one of my dim bulb questions but I just can't decide.

If your columbine had leaves in spring 2006,, It will bloom in spring 2007...... It is confusing for sure........I had them for many years and just found out 3 years ago, what the name was... ha ha Saw the photo on a seed pkt...... No question is dim.

see that's the problem I planted them in the summer of 2006 inside the refrigerator and they got their leaves in the fall when I planted them outside. They are back this year but I don't know whether to count this as year one or year two. I always do things weird lol.

yep mine aren't all that tall. And they aren't very full either. But from what I understand their best years are 3 and 4. So it's a matter of planting them every year. Since I can't get mine to self seed in the soil I have.

Strange.......My red one didnt come back last year very first time????????????? Why?????????? They sometimes only last about 3~5 years I'd say.. And that's why they do reseed, cause momma doesn't last toooo~tooooo long.. I had one last *it's still growing, for about 10 years.. but for 4 years, it never flowered.. *cause my husband kept weed~whackin' it down, then it bloomed one set of flowers the first year, and has done good since, but I would say the last few years, it's a smaller plant, not as big, not as many flowers, as it waines in age.. I suppose it's winding down.. It has reseed for me, and my dark reds' reseed reasonably well.. I've had Nora Barlow's and they didn't last, same for the McKenna Whites *or something like that, the giants' I think* haven't come back either.. I just got some from Bill and Tina/Jonni13, and planted them last year, so this year I will know what's going on with those...*haven't seen anything of them yet...

They re~ seed themselves, probably the momma died, and baby lived?? *they don't have feet (roots) to travel either..*

Nora Barlow was my pink ruffled one that only lasted a season, i figured the mice ate it. Now maybe not.

Yep, mine was pink ruffled with like white edges.. The weird thing with mine was I had bought it at the end of the season... *fall time* and planted it, so I thought for sure I'd see it the next year, but it never came up... I was disappointed, but thought maybe it was the season/winter/late planting or so...

I planted mine in spring and it bloomed, the next year nothing. I haven't found any more to try either. I have one with large blood red blooms, I am hoping to get seeds off it this year. it's the prettiest one I've seen yet.

I think the seeds must be stratified to germinate. Never heard of anyone taking them inside.

You name the colour and it's out there. I will have plenty of seeds this fall for everyone who wants them. Just name the colour and they shall be yours when it's harvesting time.

Wow you are motivated. I just don't think I could be out there if there had been snow on the ground in the morning. But then I haven't had to wait as long as you either. So I could be wrong. Good luck with your planting.

I have been very interested in reading this topic. I bought pkg. of blue and white columbine, and a pdg of Harlequin Mixed colors. I have planted them all in peat flats indoors (about April 5th) and they are sprouting and looking good so far. I seem to be getting fewer of the blue ones though. Anyway, I have really been looking forward to them growing up and blooming! But now I read that they won't bloom this first year. I also didn't know they had such tiny flowers!!! I saw some in a pot in the store with lots of blooms. The flower was about the size of a 50 cent piece!! On Web Shots etc. when you see a picture, it must be VERY close up because I thought the blossom was about as big as an Iris bloom. So disappointed, although I will love them just the same.

I mean that's one variety for just an example, but when they send up that stalk, there's several along the way.. and it's quite showy!!!

I loved all the pictures I have seen of them, close up, which is why I had to have some. I especially love the blue and white ones (forgot their name cause I threw the pkg away) and the others I just couldn't choose which color I like best so I got the mix...so they will be a surprise which ever year I get to see them!! Each color is so beautiful!

That's funny...I had a hosta pop up out of nowhere this year. I just assumed that wind (or perhaps my three year old...)carried the seeds and dropped them and somehow it survived. Columbine usually only live for 3-4 years as far as I understand. Maybe your 'mother plant' died and one of the babies came up two feet over?

I planted six different varieties in my front yard this year. A few of them died before they were able to be established, and I replaced them. I am hoping for a lot of growth this year, and I think they may bloom. (I bought them in gallon pots).

Is that true about the 4 yr longgivity of the columbine plant???
I am almost positive my dads is older than that--but perhpas the original plant is dead and what is there now is what has been re-seeding??
But if that is so, all is good, right??

Some lady told me her red and yellow columbine was at her place for 40 years , then disappeared????????? I really have no idea........What I would do, is harvest the see and make sure and plant some every fall regardless. I am thinking it depends on they type of Columbine it is.. Like annual, biannual perennial. I have heard many stories. barb

LADYSO Here is right off the see pack directions ....Sow outdoors in sprint to early summer in the North. Sow seeds evelly and thinly and barely press in . seedlings emerge in 22 to 30 days.. Or sooner. Transplant to permanent location in summmer or early fall......... Pre-chilling helps germination. That is right from the horses mouth.. Burpee perennial...... Good Luck and Happy gardening.. barb
