I have been very interested in reading this topic. I bought pkg. of blue and white columbine, and a pdg of Harlequin Mixed colors. I have planted them all in peat flats indoors (about April 5th) and they are sprouting and looking good so far. I seem to be getting fewer of the blue ones though. Anyway, I have really been looking forward to them growing up and blooming! But now I read that they won't bloom this first year. I also didn't know they had such tiny flowers!!! I saw some in a pot in the store with lots of blooms. The flower was about the size of a 50 cent piece!! On Web Shots etc. when you see a picture, it must be VERY close up because I thought the blossom was about as big as an Iris bloom. So disappointed, although I will love them just the same.

I mean that's one variety for just an example, but when they send up that stalk, there's several along the way.. and it's quite showy!!!

I loved all the pictures I have seen of them, close up, which is why I had to have some. I especially love the blue and white ones (forgot their name cause I threw the pkg away) and the others I just couldn't choose which color I like best so I got the mix...so they will be a surprise which ever year I get to see them!! Each color is so beautiful!

Your correct..... I too was disappointed in the size....They blow up the photos of them quite a bit........\\ Close ups will do that ......However.... Least ways they are growing and have nice green foilage that stays that way all year.

That's funny...I had a hosta pop up out of nowhere this year. I just assumed that wind (or perhaps my three year old...)carried the seeds and dropped them and somehow it survived. Columbine usually only live for 3-4 years as far as I understand. Maybe your 'mother plant' died and one of the babies came up two feet over?

I planted six different varieties in my front yard this year. A few of them died before they were able to be established, and I replaced them. I am hoping for a lot of growth this year, and I think they may bloom. (I bought them in gallon pots).

Is that true about the 4 yr longgivity of the columbine plant???
I am almost positive my dads is older than that--but perhpas the original plant is dead and what is there now is what has been re-seeding??
But if that is so, all is good, right??

Some lady told me her red and yellow columbine was at her place for 40 years , then disappeared????????? I really have no idea........What I would do, is harvest the see and make sure and plant some every fall regardless. I am thinking it depends on they type of Columbine it is.. Like annual, biannual perennial. I have heard many stories. barb

LADYSO Here is right off the see pack directions ....Sow outdoors in sprint to early summer in the North. Sow seeds evelly and thinly and barely press in . seedlings emerge in 22 to 30 days.. Or sooner. Transplant to permanent location in summmer or early fall......... Pre-chilling helps germination. That is right from the horses mouth.. Burpee perennial...... Good Luck and Happy gardening.. barb
