I make cover for young plants & transplants out of milk jugs withthe bottom as a flap to take it off. I screw off the cap for ventilation. My family goes through an average of 3 gallons of milk a WEEK.

My dad has alwaye done this too. except he cuts off the bottoms of the jugs, places them over his young plants and then removes the tops for ventilation & to allow a 'little' sun. Also, he can add the tops back on the coldest night if needed. he has been doing this as l ong as I can remembr---I think my grandfather did too

My grandfather's family used to have greenhouses in England.--that was their livelyhood

3 gallons of milk a week!!!!??? Holy Moley!!

JunieGirl - you've been born w/a green thumb. There's no escaping it. thumbup

I'm going to start some seeds indoors (well, a friend of mine is) & I've never done this before. Here's a few questions for our wonderfully frugal group...

1. Do you put the milk containers over the inside-to-outside transplants as soon as you plant them outside?

2. Is this before they've been "hardened-off" or after?

3. Is this a way to harden them off??

4. How do you keep the milk containers from blowing over?

5. Do the rabbits bother the containers?

6. When do you take them off?

Can't think of any other questions right now. I'm sure more will come to me as more people post.

Long live the frugal gardener!! flwr
