each year my ceramic's class has a Christmas party and we exchange gifts. Not ever anything big, but 'something'. no one has ever spent more than $5.00 per gift--and often not that much.

example:
last year I had the owner's DH take a picture of all of us together in July some time. then I made enough copies and gave each of the ladies one in a frame, as my Christmas 2006 gift.

This year I am drawing a blank--and OH !! my party is next tue.--the 18th.

So I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of something i could give 9 ladies in an age range of early 60's to early 80's??

It has to be the same for all the ladies.

I have Dollar Tree Christmas CD's but they may not all have CD players, so I need something else to go with.

Thanks in advance for your help. kissie

I love the dollar tree, honestly we have nice things at ours.....I'd check around in there for sure....

One of the cutest things I've got for Christmas that's easy was an ornament....a plain clear one that you buy in sets, with a feather stuck in it. With ribbon you attach a card to the top of it with this on it:

I am your guardian angel
I've been assigned to you
I dropped this in my struggles
As I protected you
Each time you almost stumble
Each time you almost fall
I'm your guardian angel, answering your call.

Quite a few of us got them from a member that's no longer with us.

One of these years I'm making them for my friends.

The year my tree fell over I was almost in tears thinking it broke, but it didn't........I just love that ornament. thumbup I've read that card so many times to people that I know it by heart now.

I love that gift idea Loz.

I brought two boxes of those clear ornaments at the Thrift store this summer and wondered what I could do with them. I got 30 of them for .10 I bet someone brought them and never new what to do with them because they had never been opened.

I have a Cockatoo and I save all his feathers when he sheds. I could put the white feather in the balls. But I think colorful feathers might be prettier. What color was the feather?

It's white, like you'd picture an angel feather to be....but color could be fun!

I'll go take a picture of the ornament and post it on here. thumbup

I love those clear ornaments, I bought a bunch of them a few years ago and painted them just the way I wanted!

You should be able to get those ornaments and the feathers also at Michael's. I have put photos in those clear glass bulbs as well. I cut them the same diameter as the balls and then rolled them up and tucked them in. Used some long tweezers to 'unroll' them and place them where I wanted them. Still cool a couple dozen years later.

Nothing fancy about it, just a card attached to the ornament with the verse on it....at the top of the card it says....Guardian Angel Feather.

Loz, they are simple yet elegant. beautiful. Thanks for posting the picture.

many years ago my sister bought some of those balls and painted our names & the date on them with firing gold. The ceramics lady then fired on the gold in her kiln. they are beautiful and I still have them to this day. shots

I must ask her about how she did that---

thanks to you all for your help--esp. you Loz. I could not find any clear glass bulbs today, so I began looking around for an altrenative idea--(I am going to file the ornament idea away for future reference--I have the verse written down to keep)

anyway--in my travels I found Boxed Amaryllis.--
complete with pots & growing medium
I bought them all "Red Loin" Amaryllis--
they were on sale--how could I pass them up??? shots

And, of course--- I bought myself a appleblossom Amaryllis--
(I think that is the name--it is pink)
mine was not in a box nor does it have a pot nor a core disc. why

but it was such a healthy looking plant I figured I would take it instead.

I tried to take pictures to show you, but the glare was too much--I will try again on Sunday--during the day.

thanks so much !!!

They have clear glass bulbs at the dollar store, 3 for $1. They also had some at Wal-Mart in the wedding supply aisle.

That looks like a wonderful gift, Carol!

I used to grow some - I'm not fond of red flowers, but I had the apple blossom ones - they were beautiful! I managed to keep them for a couple of years but then they died out. I should pick up another to brighten up the house!

Lynne--thank you so much !!!! kissie

oh yes I liked the pink best too--that is why I bought moi an apple blossom one--- but now how do I plant it?? I lost my little direction that came with
it (a small tag)--hey they are on sale now---$1.25 off the list price. thumbup

I bought the red ones for gifts because of Christmas--and because a lady I was talking to liked them best.--she was an older lady--her DH was a retired minister in the same type of church I go to--we had a nice chat---

I can definitely see buying the red ones for Christmas - they really make a statement! I am just not "into" red flowers any time of year, and since I don't celebrate Christmas it's not really a problem.

I'm sorry I can't help with the soil - mine all came in kits also.

Lynne--I understand about the Christmas thing.---

about the flower---my DD got one as a present one time--it came with a clear glass pot. You put rocks down--added the amaryllis bulb and some water--- It grew but did not bloom--The planting medium core looks like compacted peat moss--so I may try that---

thanks though--- kissie

I will probably get slapped but I get on the my Armaryllis soap box often.

I always hear "the bulb did not bloom". The instructions is to grow it through the summer and around September bring them in and put them in the dark for 8 wks.

If this was the way to grow this bulb why do so many people say mine did not bloom. I will tell you what I learned......

These instructions might work if you lived in a zone 8 and you had a good 4-5 months of summer. By good I mean sunny warm/hot days. But I know my summer is only June to Aug and that is not enough time to give the bulb enough energy to bloom. Especially when sometimes most of June is cool and cloudy.

My instructions if you want flowers every year if you do not have 5 month of sunny warmth.

-Plant the bulb in good potting soil. I use Miracle grow. Do not plant the bulb totally under soil. Leave 1" of the bulb above the soil line.
-Place in a Sunny Window
-When there is no frost put it outside in a sunny location
-Fertilize 1/2 strength twice a month
-Bring it in when the temps get down to 40s at night
-Place in a sunny window and water every four weeks.
-It may start to lose it leaves cut them off. If it loses all the leaves stop watering until you see leaves.
-It may not flower in Dec but it will bloom Feb-April

(I do have an exception east coast sun is not as strong as west coast so the shorter months of summer may work with the instructions of putting the bulb to sleep and get blooms)

OK I am stepping off my Soap Box. lol

so I planted my Amaryllis about 2 3 weeks ago. and one of my ceramics friends brought in pictures on her camera to show me--So I began to take pictures of my Amaryllis.
Then I noticed it was growing really fast (must be my imagination I thought)this was between feb 1 & 2.

well look at these measurments:....all in inches....

.....................Leaves........................flower Stem

..Feb.2.@.9am.........5 1/2...........................3 3/4
..................9pm.........5 3/4...........................4 5/8

..Feb.@...7:30am......6...............................5 1/2
..................7:30pm......6 3/8......................6 1/8

its like if I sat & watched it, I would be able to see it grow!!! And I have not even fertilized it yet.

i think it has something to do with the flash from the camera! i swear it because the other day when i took a pic of my mystery plant in its pot it was so little, now the sprouts are bigger than they were! but thats soo cool! but i really do think its the flash because ive never fertilized this mystery plant! ive been meaning to though.. but i havent!

pleaseee... Betty Crocker aint got nothing on me =)
