I for one am so hoping Afgrey plans to hostess a Turkey Hotline again this year! I will need all the sensible advice I can get, especially if the maintenance guy can't come tomorrow afternoon to fix my oven! Maybe Afgrey has clever tricks to cook a bird without an oven 'coz I really don't want to boil it! lol

At the very most least, I am hoping she can direct me on making my very first marguarita! I'm really gonna need one if my oven isn't fixed in time!

Merme, any chance a neighbour could roast it for you? (hoping your oven gets fixed in time).

My neighbors aren't friendly past saying "hi" if they see me outside and all my friends are either out of town or hosting large groups themselves. This is really not a season to be out of an oven!

Although... I once did a turkey in the microwave, back when I had an industrial sized one....

Afgrey ~ that margaurita sure looks good!

Merme--do you have a roaster like the churches use??
OR could you borrow one from your church, or perhaps a friend??
I have directions on how I roasted a turkey in my roaster, and I could send them to you---They come out juicy and takes a bit less time too--only thing, you cannot cook dressing inside the turkey in a roaster---but you could always use stovetop dressing & then add turkey juices to it to make it taste like it was roasted in the thurkey---Perhps buy plain and "doctor" it up with your own spices/seasonings even.

I'm sorry about your butt, Afgrey! That's gotta hurt some.

HEY! I just figured it out... if they do not fix my oven, I could always do it on the grill. Our grill has a deep dome lid and that's all you need to do one in about 4 hours. They are so yummy that way! But, I doubt I could find charcoal this time of year....

Hi Tamara,
I have a 20 pounder in my fridge right now- getting ready to dig it out and get the giblets and other stuff to make my stuffing and gravy... got to make get as much done today as I can... getting started in a few minutes as soon as I get more motivated!

20 pounder, wow. Guess turkey's are cheaper there than here. Turkey's are almost $3 a pound right now, makes for an expensive bird.

OH MY! Tamara - I ended up getting it for .38 a lb- about $8.00... they had a deal if you bought $20 worth of groceries - and it counted toward the $20... if it was $3.. a pound here we would be eating almost anything else! LOL!

Sending my money to Nana to buy me turkeys lol

Yup, cheapest we ever got turkeys for was $1.69 a pound. I always spend $20 on my turkey so he's not very big to say the least.

My best friend got a 20lb turkey for $6......it was free at Martins actually when you spend so much over the year but she upgraded to the Butterball turkey. lol

I always wondered why they pardon the Presidential turkey....that is so funny to me because you know they are all going to be eating a turkey on Thanksgiving anyway.....weird tradition.

I got a 23 pound turkey for free yesterday - our grocery store gives free turkeys twice a year - at Thanksgiving and Easter - if you spend a certain amount - can't remember how much, but I'm thinking it's a few $100.

I didn't WANT a 23 pounder - it's just the 4 of us, and we are going to Don's sister tomorrow, so this one will be made on Saturday. But that was the smallest size they had yesterday! It was only supposed to be free up to 21 pounds, but they took off the total price at the register - good thing, since it wasn't MY fault that that is the smallest size they had!

We don't get free turkeys here either Tamara! Unless you work for a big company and then they give them to the employees for Thanksgiving.

Well! The oven repairman is supposed to be over this afternoon. My landlord didn't even bother to send a maintenance guy to check first, he just called the appliance man directly and told him the hours I would be home today. So he called me and got the make and model numbers so he'd know what to bring and not waste time. YAY!

So I won't have to be grilling in the snow...

The appliance guy was here and fixed the oven. When he came in, I said "Boy, am I glad to see you!" He laughed and said "I bet you are!" He had all the right stuff and fixed it easily.

So Maxi came in and saw the oven on and said "So, it's fixed? What did you have to do, kick it?" The guy cracked up then explained what he'd done. Maxi sighed in relief... "How lame would that have been for it to only have needed a kick and we didn't know that?!"

So now we're cooking!

Merme,

I am so glad too your oven if fixed- grilling a turkey is a pain--- on of my BIL's used to do one every yr on the grill and no one would eat it- took forever and by the time he was done we had all eaten already- it always ended up in second and third day enchiladas...LOL!

I got my giblets cooked- one batch of potatoes for mashed... next is cooking, the corn pudding is in the oven... next will be the stuffing mixed and ready to be baked tomorrow., got to put the sweet potato casserole together too. I still need to boil the eggs for deviling- and the rolls are rising too for baking in a while... tonight I will make the 2 pies I am baking - a pumpkin and a lemon meringue , I think we may end up ordering a pizza for dinner cause my oven and stove will be busy.... LOL!
Well off to finish as much as I can before the boys arrive- don't know how much I will get done while they are here...

Nana ~ I don't know how your BIL set up his turkey on the grill, but years ago I was taught by my first EX's cousins in Wisconsin how to do it for summertime parties with lots of guests. It takes only 4 hours with this technique and it is so sweet and tender -- really really yummy! After I learned how, I had a neighbor in OH who routinely asked me to do one for her family throughout the year; they couldn't get enough of it.

Afgrey ~ I've never tried a smoker, though!

Hey have you guys seen that insurance TV ad that says "Each Thanksgiving 200 families deep fry their turkey and 15 of them burn their houses down"? The man who does it cracks me up.

We always have a deep fried turkey along with the roasted turkey. We deep fry it outside in the middle of the driveway so that we don't burn the house down.

My SIL always deep fries a turkey---some years we have a conventional one as well--it will depend on the # of people my DD has invited.--One can only fit so big a turkey in the fryer, after all---
