My husband put up our winter feeder with suet and a woodpecker arrived as soon as we put it out.

VERY NICE! That appears to be either an adult male Downy Woodpecker, or else an adult male Hairy Woodpecker. Both species are IDENTICAL, except the Hairy is half again bigger than the Downy, and the easiest way to tell is that the Hairy has a much longer bill than the Downy. Both species are gah-gah over suet, as are ALL Woodpeckers. I suspect that that is a Downy.

Thanks blush That was what we was thinking it was a Downy. That is all we have seen around here except for the Pilated(sp). Every once in a while we see and hear that huge guy lol

You have some nice Woodpeckers in the UK, too, Glenda. Go to the RSPB feeder cams online. The cam in Abernethy Forest In Scotland shows some great Woodpeckers and Red Squirrels. It looks like my new son-in-law will be from Scotland. He is a sweetheart and is teaching us the Scottish accent.
