Awww, just means you're feeding them well.....my birds could eat me out of house and home if I let them. I spend so much on birdseed and suet.

They get plenty of food off my flowers.. Sun flowers, cosmos, liatris.. They grape arbor......
I"m only doing this cause my sister brought this stuff for my birthday.. Free
I knew it is pricy ..My neighbor has a regular feeder not finch and she said it costs her 4 dollars each time she fills that thing.. It is about a foot square wooden one for many birds..

yep - that's a purple house finch! I always wondered why they named them "purple" when they really do look red! And Dodge - in the bird kingdom, the MALES are the lucky ones to get the beautiful plummage colors, while the females are usually the drab looking ones!

You are sure having fun with that feeder. clap What a great gift that was for you! I go through 50 pounds of seed every two weeks. yikes Not finch food though. That does seem to go farther than the regular seed. Of course the squirrels get more than their share. I even have a pair of doves that like the thistle seed. Bird watching is so much fun. thumbup

I find it fun watching, but they are wasteful buggers......That is hangin on the porch and I have a catch pan on the floor ........YOu would be suprised what they arent eating......Put something on the ground like a plastic garbage bag and watch.

But yes I do love watching the little buggers.....I sweep up the seed and recycle.
Dont tell the finches...... blush

That is a male House Finch. They are even more common than Goldfinches. The females look like a different species. They have NO red on them at all. They are brown and white striped. Here is a picture of a male and female House Finch together. The male is on the left, the female on the right.

Those two are eating Black Oil Sunflower seeds. I use an old metal table as a platform feeder. Some bird species, Like Cardinals, Blue jays, Sparrows, and Juncos do NOT like to use the Tube Feeders and prefer to eat their seed on a flat platform feeder or the ground. House Finches like to use BOTH tube feeders AND platform feeders.

I get my Black Oil Sunflower seeds at Tractor Supply Company. They WERE $12.00 for 50 pounds of seed, but this Fall they have gone up to $17.00 for 50 pounds of seed. Anyway, Dodge, y'all are farmers, check your local feed and seed store. Striped and/or Black Oil Sunflower seeds work EQUALLY well to feed birds and other wildlife, (and they make a GREAT snack for Finchers and other human-like critters, too!).

NOT in the northeast. Goldfinch outnumber purple and house finch combined by a ratio of about 20 goldfinch to 1 of the house and or purple.

I WISH i could get those southern prices up here. Last year I couldnt get a bag of BOSS WHOLESALE for less than $14 for a 50 lb bag. I was selling it for $18.99 and people were flocking here for the bargain price!
The studies I have read state that BOSS is better than the striped because; the thinner shell is easier for smaller birds to crack open, there is a higher oil content (good for tweetys), and there is more seed to shell ratio. The striped youre paying for more shell waste.

CAROL HERE Val is my DD.

Thorny: For a large part of my winter last year all I had were Junco's. They ate from a hanging house type feeder.

Dodge: I am so glad you are enjoying your feeder. and I LOVE the idea of recycling the feed-(my ground is black where my feeder used to go )-but the first time my squirrels get "Happy" because all they have to do for a meal is knock over the recycleing container, well then no more recycling for me !!! lol great idea though!!!!

I moved my finch feeder and filled it up. Yesterday there were 5 or 6 yellow finches on it. How long do they stay? I had it on the other side of the house and the birds used it but I couldn't see it all the time. I love these little yellow birds.

Both the Goldfinches and House Finches stay ALL year. Goldfinches change color drastically in Winter from BRIGHT Canary yellow black and white to a sorta yellowish beige in color. Look at the pictures Dodge posted. That is the Goldfinch in WINTER plummage.
