http://www.arborday.org/trees/treeGuide/forests.cfm

This is Incredible Like the WildWilly Woods,And the in the Mountains in Washington,, I'm thinking because it is the EVERWET state, that Soo many Woodland area are layed as a forest. IS this correct,,??

Here are Pictures of WildWilly's Woods,,,,

Can't wait for the 'Woods' next! I had always thought the words Woods and Forest were interchangeable. Guess not! That article was really interesting!!!
So, is your next post, showing Woods, going to explain the difference?!

Sooooo I am guessing In Washington~ Seattle area because of undergrowth, moisture factors and overgrown tree canopy's ~ Thus = Forest

Where as Here in Texas Tho we have high Humidity with Dense Woodland areas we would Have NO constant moisture factors, very dry seasons, Thus = Woods???

Dang Looking at those pictures again makes me want to be standing right there in Washington again! boohoo

Those conclusions sound very logical to me!! thumbup
When I go 'walking in the woods' there isn't any of that "Undergrowth". The floor is open, just fallen twigs and leaves, the trees are farther apart, letting more sunlight through, and there is no towering canopy. You certainly seem to have nailed the difference, to me!!!
Interesting topic, Diane.

The forest looks much more beautiful to me! When I walked in the Woods at Senior Camp the floor wasn't interesting at all,.....untill I came to that bleached out log to sit down on; more dead leaves, twigs, and tangling vines than anything else! I would love the mushrooms and mosses and ferns!!! None of that in these Woods! I think that the humidity would even make a forest 'smell' better. All these woods smelled like was dry and dusty!

We have national forest land here that has nothing but scrub oak and manzanita and things like that. We also have national forest here that is all sand dunes dotted with the occasional cacti. I always thought 'forest' Was natural (indigenous) growth to an area. And woods were a treed area, maybe naturally occurring or maybe grown by man.

woods, a dense growth of trees usu. greater than a grove and smaller than a forest. (Webster)

Doesn't the Pacific NW have some of the best forests neenee

On a hiker forum, one hiker from back east, who had posted for OR / WA hiking trail suggestions, upon return to the east from the west coast, revived his forum saying "hiking will never be the same again" - referring to the eastern trails.

teach If you go running through the woods, you will eventually get poked in the eye by a branch of a tree... If you go running through a forest, you will trip over a log and get poked in the eye by a downed limb and when you roll over (writhing in pain) you will look up and see the boughs of the trees that tower above you.....
