This week is our first week of non-90 degree weather and I was thinking that I should probably get the lettuce and spinach in the ground pretty soon. We replaced a window and I was thinking of making a cold frame out of the old window. Should I let the lettuce germinate and then put on the cold frame or do I need to wait for cooler weather before putting the cold frame on? Just to clarify: I'm considering a cold frame to be 4 bales of alfalfa or straw with a piece of glass on top. Lows are in the upper 40's to mid 50's. So it's not like I have an immediate frost to worry about. I believe the frost date for my area is Oct 10th, though.

Any advice or suggestions is more than welcome.

Thanks!

I wouldnt worry about the glass top until temps in the 30's are predicted.

I wondered about that. I just wasn't sure how low (temps) is low enough to cover. So, unless a freeze is headed my way, I'll keep the glass off. Thanks!
