Ok - we have a dangerous intersection on the main road just up from our street. The two roads, though busy, main county roads, are really 2 lane country roads with curves and bends. There are stop signs on the north-south sides, but not on the east-west. We have been trying to get it to be a 4-way stop for years, as there have been numerous accidents there, to no avail.

This morning, while picking up Amy's friend for school, she sees this new sign!!!
[Linked Image]

Can't see it? How about now?
[Linked Image]

And if you are still not sure, how's this?!?!?!? touched madd tapfoot
[Linked Image]

Do we REALLY need a sign to tell us that squirrels are in abundance there?
As they are everywhere around here? In the 15 years we have lived here, I have yet to see a rat, or any other MARSUPIAL that would cause an accident in this intersection!!! At the probable cost of that sign, don't you agree that a stop sign would be more worthwhile in saving HUMAN lives, as compared to saving a MARSUPIAL'S life?!?!?!?

I mean really! Do you think I am over-reacting? why

Do you have any odd signs in your area?
I used to love taking pictures of interesting or strange roadsigns, but this one just got my dander up this morning - sorry! blush I'd rather see NO sign there at all, than this one littering the road, or even yet, causing MORE accidents there when drivers are trying to even figure out WHAT a marsupial is for pete's sake!!! teach

You just never know what somebody sitting in a office will think up, do you???

But is it possible that it was far easier-(legally)- to place a "marsupial" sign then a stop sign & at least this way people "might" be a bit more cautious in the intersection??

"Just a notion I had"

Too funny.

We have moose and deer crossing signs, never thought there was need for a mouse crossing lol

An ecological group must of requested the sign.

To get a stop sign in the area, start a petition. Get all local residents to sign, bring it to the attention of the local Mayor's office and petition your Department of Transportation.

Good idea, Tamara!

OK - I stand corrected by my son, who really does seem to know everything! lol thumbup kissie

Rats and squirrels are NOT marsupials!

According to dictionary.com
Quote
marsupial
Any of various mammals of the order Marsupialia, whose young are very undeveloped when born and continue developing outside their mother's body attached to one of her nipples. Most marsupials have longer hindlegs than forelimbs, and the females usually have pouches in which they carry their young. Kangaroos, opossums, and koalas are marsupials.

HMMMMMMM... we DO have "some" opossums, but not very many...
And we definitely do NOT have kangaroos, and koalas!!! lol why shock
I really can't help wondering if this is a joke, but the sign is on an official post and looks very real!!! why

I am thinking it was a 'nature group' that requested it. Either that or there was a break out at the local zoo you didn't hear about. lol

Oh by the way someone should inform them that their 'marsupial' looks like a rodent grin

EXACTLY!!! That's why Amy said marsupials are rats, etc!
Possums have much longer tails and the ones here definitely have fatter bodies!

We have a sign on one part of the freeway that I always thought was funny. It says no parking any time.

That's like the time they put up the new 'Moose crossing' signs here. My dear old grandmother one day said, "I have been passing here once a week and I've never seen them moose crossing, apparently they've put up that sign in the wrong place". We still tease her about that one lol

a couple of summers ago when we were vacationing around Destin, Fl, we were crossing over a long bay bridge. We were driving along and there was a sign that said "Do Not Pass" Of course it was because of oncoming traffic, but my youngest son almost came unglued. He yelled "It said do not pass, and we passed it!" We still pick at him about that one.

When I was a kid I used to think the "Pass with Care" signs meant to go through the area carefully. I didn't realize it meant overtake another car with care. lol I remember saying to mom, we'd better be careful going thru here. touched

The only indigenous marsupial in North America is opossum. That is actually a funny sign. Signs around here that irritate me are near every school: "Slow Children". I know what it means but it bothered me when I was a kid and it bothers me to this day.
I sent a very realistic looking sign to my friends in New Zealand that said "Rattlesnake Crossing". Also sent them a motion detector rattlesnake for their yard. There are no snakes in N.Z.

Cindy - I haven't thought of those chain-up signs since we left Reno!
No one here in NY would know what they are talking about!

I drove my oldest bonkers by reaching over to try to 'stop' her head. I also reached over when a sign said 'soft shoulder' She was not amused.....

I know!!! You'd think they could stay where they belong and not confuse drivers!!! lol touched rolz

I can't even imagine how many drivers are going to say
"what the XXXX is a marsupial?!?!?!?"
I think that's going to cause more traffic problems than the rare possum that might cross the road there! uhuhh

I'd call a newspaper and get them involved. They'd love to show up the politicians as being so stupid to prefer savings the lives of marsupials over humans!!!!

Not to mention that possums are nocturnal and wouldn't really cause any traffic concerns during the day when it's busy.
