i know this can be from too much water. this year we've been doing very good as we've used hay for mulch for the first time. plants were doing very well until the rain came. nothing i can do about that water but is there somehow i can help the maters from splitting??? will any vitamin/mineral help them to absorb the water slower so they don't split? ANYTHING i can do?????

Are the tomatoes staked, caged or laying on the mulch? Have you used hay or straw for mulch? Is it possible that if your mulch is straw it's not allowing enough moisture to reach the soil. Move some straw and check how far down soil is moist. Our tomatoes will split when the soil remains dry for more than three days.

actually i think it is straw- less weed seeds right? but it's not thick water still gets down there. and the maters are caged. i think i'm just about done though. i will just pick any before the rain comes. it just kills me to pick them green or even 1/2 green knowing they could have ripened on the vine. oh well.

Yup, water can cause splitting. And, to my knowledge, there is nothing you can do about it, unless you want to pick them early. Sorry!
