I've been growing these plants for the past 3 summers. The first summer, the leaves got HUGE but they dried out too quickly and drooped in the hot sun. I managed to overwinter a few of the bulbs, but they didn't like the shade they were planted in last summer in pots, and died out altogether.
This summer I got some GIGANTIC bulbs from WalMart - same place I had gotten the original ones, but they weren't nearly as big as these. I put them out late this year, under the white birch tree where I had cut down the old bushes. They seem to be loving the partial morning sun/afternoon shade there, and are coming along nicely.
They aren't very large yet, but I have my fingers crossed!
I'd love to see other's pictures of these fascinating plants!

Looking good Lynne!! I had a simular problem last year because it was soooo hot and dry, I think this year mine have done better because we've had soo much rain and milder temps..

Woa! I have one planted sorrounded by the pinkish version, but i would actually be scared if it got that big. Now i am nervous. :)

I'll have to snap picture of mine. flowers/July162007GiantEE2ndyr.jpg" alt="[Linked Image]" class="post-image" style="height:auto!important;max-width:100%!important;"/> I have wild tarro too. flowers/July142007wildtarrowithraindrops.jpg" alt="[Linked Image]" class="post-image" style="height:auto!important;max-width:100%!important;"/> My EE I have divided so is still some in sun(roots shaded by surrounding plants) and then some thats in more shade but does get some sun& almost 6 ft tall.If I don't keep the ones in full sun watered they will get brown leaves and fall over and wither up.I also got red stemmedEE and illustris.I lost my black.I'm able to grow them in the ground.I tried moveing the black while dormant.Don't recommend doing that.My wild tarro spreads alot.it sends out runners.where is moist is alot...where's its more dry is less.I've grown it in pond also.

This is the thread I was looking for a few days ago. I know very little about EE's, but hubby and I love them. Everyones' EEs are amazing!! Here is a pic of my baby one. First year in the ground. Gets morning sun, then full shade. I tried some black ones that were supposed to be sun tolerant, but they burned up--but one came back!! Looks like a caladium!! Anyway--here's our baby....

Aside from moist soil, what are your other suggestions for healthy EEs?

well.don't grow illustris in full sun most of day....the dark coloring don't show then, but the stems are still dark.it stays watered well so otherwise does fine so I'll likely move this one back to a shadier spot. flowers/July162007tarrotxstarhibmumsseedlin.jpg" alt="[Linked Image]" class="post-image" style="height:auto!important;max-width:100%!important;"/> is wild tarro behind it and it does the same for me sun or shade. this is the red stemmed flowers/July182007redstemmedEE.jpg" alt="[Linked Image]" class="post-image" style="height:auto!important;max-width:100%!important;"/> and have another bunch of it on both sides of pond in hexbed.it didn't get the extra water....so the leaves fell over.this one gets more than 6 hours of sun and is taller. The banana leaves give some shade to the hexbed ones.

WOW - I am so jealous of everyone's HUGE leaves!!! Mine are coming along, but the leaves are not very large yet, and unfortunately, I cannot keep them in the ground here after the fall. I hope they grow large before I have to dig them up!

give them rich moist soil, maybe a raised bed as that will warm the soil faster.

That second picture is beautiful - is that a zebra plant in flower in there? What type of EE is that - I've not seen one like that for sale around here?

Thank you plant. The second one is Alocasia 'Polly'. The back of the leaf is dark purple. It is my favorite EE. I brought it at Home Depot 3 yrs ago.

Now it is almost a month later from the last picture I posted . These elephant ears are getting taller and taller,, The "shorter" fence is 7 ft ~ look how tall these are in caparison to the fence. This is their second year<<(for the ones in the corner ) I will divide these and place more along the shorter fence so I can eventually get the short fence lined all the way across with them ( 1st year for the ones along the back side),and place a brug in between every few of them. They both like a lot of water and I planted the Brug there this spring to see if it liked that side of the back fence , appearantly they do. ( You can see the brug is tall too and blooming).. anyway Here they are reaching for the sky!

Diane - those are FANTASTIC!!!
Mine are only a fraction of the size that yours are, and are drooping down to the ground - how do you get yours to stay upright like that???

Lots and lots of water Lynne,, Last year they weren't this big or tall,, I'm thinking that all the rain we had this spring and summer helped them along. Now that our weather has changed to extreme hot (105 all week 112 heat index ) some of the leave are browning, scorching and curling , particularly the EE by the birdbath planter the ones in the corner are fine, as are the ones on the back fence but another week of this heat and they may end up being cooked! When I have gotten off work this week they are dropping, due to the heat But I water them really deep and about an hour later they are upright again.

EE's can stand sun but need LOTS of water when in the Sun. My one EE has leaves as about 2 feet long and about a foot plus wide. Got to put it in a larger pot next year! I too love EEs!

WOW! What gorgeous EEs everyone has! They are some of my favorite plants, I love the tropical feeling they add to a garden. Here are some from my yard Alocasia 'Polly' and Alocasia sanderiana 'Nobilis' 4 or 5 different C. esculenta varieties all growing together here Colocasia 'Black Runner' C. 'Yellow Splash'.... and .... C. 'Nancy's Revenge'

Well... my elephant ears have NOT been liking this dry weather this summer. Lately the weather has been gorgeous - sunny, not too hot, and dry - but that's the problem - we haven't had rain in a while and I haven't watered as much as I should. Guess I'm afraid to see the water bill now that Don has filled the pond! So, here is one of my elephant ears this morning after I gave it a good soaking yesterday afternoon. I'm glad the center is at least perking up - I'll need to cut off the yellowing leaves - all the leaves were on the ground before I watered!
